The Parliamentary Transportation and Communications Committee called on the prime minister to refer a number of berths in the large port of Faw in Basra to investment to keep pace with the global economic movement, denying the existence of government slackness in implementing the project.
The head of the committee, Representative Zahra Al-Bajari, said in a statement to (Al-Mada) that “it is necessary for the port of Faw to be the destination for international goods, and we must invest this port in a real way.”
Al-Bajari added, "Its cost will start at two billion dollars, and the completion rates are advanced with the plans' percentages, in addition to that there is a delay in the navigational channel due to the lack of entry of the necessary materials."
And she pointed out, "The first berth will be completed within four months, while the other berths have the possibility of completing them as a first stage within the year 2025."
Al-Bajari also called on the government to "announce the remaining berths of the port of Faw to invest in order to keep pace with the global economic movement."
And she pointed out, "The great port of Faw project is considered one of the important and expected economic projects by Iraq and the countries of the region, east and west."
And Al-Bajari stated, “This is after there has become an integrated economic triangle represented by the port of Faw, the development road and the transit project, which must be worked on jointly because they are linked to each other and would change the reality of the Iraqi economy and make it an economy that does not depend on the oil resource only.”
And she continued, "The financial allocations for the project do not face any problem by the executive authorities, whether the ministries of finance or planning, as both are supportive of the project and its financial allocations."
Al-Bajari indicated that there is always "questioning the work steps at Al-Faw port."
And she stated, "This hadith does not correspond to reality, since the work rates are advanced and are moving faster than planned."
And she added, "The great port of Al-Faw plans a design that contains 90 berths. Those berths must be referred to the investment side in order for the work to be joint between the private and government sectors, so that the project witnesses a clear and rapid renaissance in the interest of the Iraqi economy."
And the representative of Basra, Amer Al-Fayez, is counting on “the port to be an easy path between the countries of the West and the East through Iraq.”
Al-Fayez continued, "Al-Faw will outperform the region's ports in terms of importance," and he talked about "a government interest in completing the project because of the benefits it will bring to Iraq, improve the economic situation and enhance its political position."
He pointed out, "The obstacles to completing the project have not ended and will continue, because its completion will give Iraq economic progress over the countries of the region."
Al-Fayez added, "The affected countries will try by various means to obstruct the implementation of the project, whether in the current or future stages."
The economic researcher, Safwan Qusay, said, "The port of Faw will not function without the presence of modern roads and means of communication, and a tight mechanism to receive giant ships and link them to a train system."
Qusai added, "These mechanisms help smooth the movement of goods from eastern countries to the European Union, via the Turkish side."
He pointed out, "The second stage can take place through the transfer of goods from the continent of Africa to the port of Faw via the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
Qusai explained, "All these developments turn Iraq into a great investment opportunity, given the geographical location it enjoys among the countries of the world."
And he stressed, "the necessity of establishing refrigerated warehouses and agreeing to link with the countries of the region so that we have sustainability in the movement of goods."
And Qusay said, "Iraq is looking forward to export operations from the European Union towards the Asian continent, and the process is not limited to the opposite direction."
He called for "delivering messages of reassurance to the United States of America that it has industrial facilities that can transfer its technologies to Iraq, as it sees itself as allied with Iraq and does not want to abandon it."
And Qusai stated, "The requirements also dictate that we have export operations from Iraq towards Asian countries in order to create a state of balance in interests in order to develop the national economy."
The Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhibis, visited the Al-Faw port project in Basra Governorate on the 23rd of last month and confirmed, “The completion rates achieved in the projects of the large port of Al-Faw are witnessing remarkable development and have exceeded 60 percent for the five berths,” referring to “the completion of the concrete wall of the Al-Faw port berths and the container yard ".
Muheibis stressed that "the Al-Faw port project enjoys great support from the Prime Minister, Mohamed Shiaa Al-Sudani, in order to make this great national project a success, which is considered an artery that is pumped into the development road project, which the government intends to start implementing."
