    Baghdad Today - Follow-up
    Today, Friday (August 11, 2023), the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) called on the Kurdistan region to expedite the unification of the Peshmerga forces, whose loyalty and affiliation are divided into the two Kurdish parties (the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party).
    A senior Pentagon official said in a press statement, followed by "Baghdad Today", that: "The Peshmerga forces are an important part of the Iraqi Border Guard forces, and they have been recognized by the Iraqi constitution, so we look forward to the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi security forces increasing cooperation between them."
    He stressed the importance of securing the needs of the Peshmerga forces "to carry out their tasks."  
    Regarding the United States' position on the process of uniting the Peshmerga forces, the senior Pentagon official said: "We want there to be a unified non-political Peshmerga force under the control of the Peshmerga Ministry," stressing at the same time Washington's desire to "provide the needs, provide financial support, and enhance the capabilities of the teams." affiliated to the Ministry of Peshmerga, in order to carry out its tasks.
    He pointed out that they clearly communicated their demands to officials in the Kurdistan region, adding that "the Peshmerga forces were an important partner in the war against ISIS and the goal of the final elimination of ISIS, so we want to continue training and qualifying the Peshmerga and enhancing its professionalism."
    He stressed that the United States is committed to working with "organized non-political teams (of the Peshmerga forces) and has clearly communicated this to political officials."
     Regarding US support for the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi security forces, the official said: "We do not yet have a deadline regarding granting financial aid to the Peshmerga forces."
    He concluded that they were "very frank" in expressing their desire to "accelerate the process of uniting the Peshmerga forces."
