    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Iraqi sources told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the Iraqi judiciary is investigating new corruption charges linked to the government team of former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, and it is likely that they will end with the issuance of new arrest and summons orders during the coming period. According to the sources, these orders may not exclude Al-Kadhimi himself, who has been outside Iraq since he handed over power to the current Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani last October .
Last October, the revelation for the first time of the “theft of the century” case, in which former senior officials and businessmen were involved, sparked widespread discontent in Iraq, which in recent years has witnessed widespread protests demanding an end to corruption .
The case relates to the disappearance of an amount of 3.7 trillion Iraqi dinars (more than two and a half billion US dollars) from tax deposit funds in the Ministry of Finance, and it was revealed by several concerned parties about two months before the end of the Al-Kadhimi government’s term .
For his part, a source close to Al-Kadhimi said, in a brief interview with Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, that “Al-Kadhimi made several unannounced visits to Baghdad to meet specific people and for periods that did not exceed two days in each visit, but he settled permanently in London, and is also present in the Emirates.” And Lebanon, with frequent visits .”
    Crime and Punishment
Last month, the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq issued four arrest warrants addressed to the International Police, Interpol, to arrest senior officials in the former Al-Kadhimi government, on charges related to the tax deposits sector .
According to the four memorandums appended with the signature of the Chief Public Prosecutor, Judge Najm Abdullah Ahmed, dated August 8, the defendants are the former head of the intelligence service, Judge Raed Jouhi, the director of Al-Kadhimi’s private office, Ahmadinejad, Al-Kadhimi’s political advisor, Mashreq Abbas, and the former Minister of Finance. Abdul Amir Allawi .
Ongoing investigations into corruption charges in Iraq
A senior official in the Supreme Judicial Council told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, on condition of anonymity, that “arrest warrants against a number of members of Al-Kadhimi’s team were issued far from talk of pressure and settling political scores, but rather according to evidence and confessions officially recorded by the judicial authorities. ” .
He added that the evidence was collected “through investigations that have been ongoing for many months, related to financial corruption, receiving bribes, taking commissions for government contracts, deals and decisions, passing official letters and books, and facilitating transactions in violation of regulations. ”
The same official pointed out that “last week, the executive authorities sent letters to a number of countries where those wanted by the judiciary are located, most notably Britain, the Emirates, and the United States of America, with the aim of extraditing them,” noting that there has been no response from those countries so far .
Progress achieved by the Iraqi Integrity and Judicial Commission
For his part, an Iraqi official in the Sudanese government told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, requesting that his name not be revealed, that “in the coming period, and according to investigations, perhaps arrest and investigation orders will be issued against new figures in the previous Al-Kadhimi government. ”
He added, "There is progress made by the Integrity and Judicial Commission in the file of what is known as the theft of the century, and it is not unlikely that a summons warrant will be issued against Al-Kadhimi," especially if any of the defendants in this case or other files against him confess, he said .
The government official considered that “Al-Kadhimi’s political exposure helped in the judicial and legal procedures to take their course in the investigations,” indicating that Al-Kadhimi does not have cover or support from one of the influential parties in the country .
An expected arrest warrant against Al-Kadhimi
In turn, the representative of the “Coordinating Framework” coalition, Ali Al-Jamali, in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, expected that an arrest warrant would be issued against Al-Kadhimi during the coming period, according to investigations and information he had seen .
He denied that the escalating measures against the Al-Kadhimi government were motivated by “political revenge, as some believe,” explaining that “there is evidence proving the involvement of prominent members of the government in major corruption cases and files, and even extortion, and the government and judicial authorities are continuing their work to recover these fugitives from justice. ” .
Al-Jamali added, “There are many lawsuits filed against Al-Kadhimi by various parties and personalities, related to corruption cases, blackmail cases, and even threats and torture cases, including claims for his involvement in the airport incident (the assassination of the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, and the leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis). Near Baghdad International Airport in 2020) .
He pointed out that "the judicial authorities have not yet resolved these cases, and therefore it is highly expected that an arrest warrant will be issued against Al-Kadhimi at any moment ."
But the researcher in Iraqi political affairs, Ahmed Al-Sharifi, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that there is almost a political agreement between the influential forces, especially the coordination framework, to keep Al-Kadhimi away from any future political presence or action .
He explained, "The political forces have a fear of holding Al-Kadhimi accountable or prosecuted, because it may open the door to holding former or even new prime ministers accountable ."
Despite these measures against former officials in the Al-Kadhimi government, the first accused in the crime of “theft of the century,” the merchant Nour Zuhair, is outside the prison walls, while sources indicate, according to the judiciary, that he is carrying out his commercial activities, in the field of buying and selling real estate, normally in the capital, Baghdad .
At the end of October last year, Iraqi security arrested Zuhair, the owner of the companies “Al-Qant” and “Mubdoun,” at Baghdad International Airport, during his attempt to flee Iraq, based on an arrest warrant issued by the Supreme Judicial Council, following investigations that led to the involvement of Nour Zuhair in the “case.” " Theft of the century ."
Later, the first judge in the Baghdad court, Dhia Jaafar, announced that Zuhair had paid 400 billion dinars (about 306 million dollars) out of 1 trillion and 600 billion (about 1.3 billion dollars) that he had obtained from stealing tax deposit funds, confirming the continued prosecution. The other names participating with him, who received the rest of the amount .
