The World Bank supports the water file with $3 million

The World Bank has allocated $3 million to support the Iraqi government in solving the problem of water, dams, and climate change in the country.
The Special Representative of the Bank’s mission in Iraq, Richard Abdel Nour, said in his speech during the “Water and Water Resources” conference held at the American University of Iraq, attended by “Al-Sabah”: “The Bank has allocated this amount to assist and support the Iraqi government in implementing the water strategy in Iraq and the use of modern irrigation systems and dam security to prevent a repeat of the humanitarian disaster that happened in Libya.”
He added, "The bank supports the Iraqi government technically by providing its expertise and experiences that took place in other countries, and helping it solve the problem of water scarcity and environmental impacts that have negatively affected Iraq."
During the conference dedicated to critical issues in water management and conservation with sustainable innovations, which concluded its work yesterday, Sunday, Abdel Nour stated that “work can be carried out by experts to complete all work related to water until the year 2026,” noting that “there is strategic support for the government according to a report.” Climate and Development, which was issued by the Bank at the end of last year, which could provide billions of dollars in investments to modernize the water and agricultural sectors and reduce the climate impact occurring in the country.”
He pointed to the water scarcity facing Iraq, which affects internal migration, which requires the Iraqi government to accelerate the implementation of strategies related to water scarcity.
For his part, the Executive Director of the Reform Cell, Dr. Amer Al-Adad, said, “There is diligent work to develop specific policies and projects in order to rationalize water consumption within the country.”
Al-Adad told Al-Sabah during the conference: “The cell is working in accordance with the Prime Minister’s directive to describe the water situation in the country in a scientific and accurate manner and to take the correct policies to rationalize it.” He stressed that “there is technology in the world that can reduce water consumption in agriculture to a tenth of the amount.” used at the present time, especially since two-thirds or three-quarters of the water coming into Iraq is used in this sector,” indicating that “there is no harm in Iraq bringing such capabilities and using them to rationalize water consumption in agriculture.” As for the President of the American University in Iraq, Michael Mullenix explained that “the American University in the United States provided $3.7 million as a grant for water sustainability and its projects.”
He added during his speech, "The university will work with its counterparts in Canada, Europe and China on these projects, and to spread environmental awareness and rationalize consumption in the university curricula taught to Iraqi students."
He explained, "Part of these amounts will be allocated to research conducted at the university on water, environment, and sustainability topics."
