As part of its weekly activities, the Iraqi Media Network Museum organized an evening that addressed (the future of print journalism and the challenges it faces in light of the technological development of the media) in the presence of the head of the Iraqi Media Network, Dr. Nabil Jassim, the head of the Iraqi Journalists’ Syndicate, Muayyad Al-Lami, and a number of writers, journalists, and media professionals. Each of the journalists attended the event. Nermin Al-Mufti, writer Taha Jazaa, and journalist Irada Al-Jubouri.
Dr. Nabil Jassim said in his speech during the evening, which was attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “print journalism is one of the important media outlets that documented many social and political issues, which is considered a document and a source that can be consulted at any time.”
He added: “When radio appeared, some of them thought that it was beginning to threaten the future of newspapers, and when television appeared, they also thought that it was starting to pull the rug out of radio, and so on.”
Dr. Nabil Jassim stressed that “print journalism faces many challenges in light of the development of media and the rapid acceleration of unprecedented technological development in the world. “This requires the continuity of print journalism and protecting it from extinction.”
In turn, the head of the Journalists Syndicate, Moayad Al-Lami, stressed that “newspapers will not end, and may weaken financially with the presence of pressure and media attacks, and we must remind the next generation of our powerful paper publications, such as Al-Zawraa newspaper and other important newspapers.”
For her part, journalist Nermin Al-Mufti said, “The future of print journalism in Iraq is very different from the reality of journalism in the world. The fact that Iraq witnessed many conflicts and exceptional political and social crises, which affected the future and continuity of print journalism, which led to the closure of many important newspapers in Iraq.”
She added, “The paper press has its own privacy that is very different when we browse an article on the iPad or smart phone. Likewise, the paper press is distinguished by being far from falsifying real-time facts and information, unlike the electronic press, as it is possible for information to be added and other information to be deleted through the process of electronic theft in what is called ( Hacker).”
Writer Taha Jazaa pointed out that “talking about print journalism is always linked to the nostalgia and emotion stored in us, and we almost reach the stage of denial of what the paper press situation has become.”
He added: “Not a long time ago, we used to subscribe in exchange for a sum of money in order to have newspapers delivered to us from libraries, but unfortunately we have moved far away from this pattern that was prevalent in the social environment due to the ease of obtaining paper newspapers through the phone and with the push of a button on the (pdf) program.” “.
He stressed that “electronic journalism cannot displace print journalism in any way, no matter how advanced it is electronically and technologically.”
The writer Irada Al-Jubouri pointed out in her intervention that, “There is an entire generation that does not know paper and does not deal with it, so how can we convince this generation to read a newspaper?”
She added, “The challenges are real and realistic in the collapse of the print newspaper system little by little.”
She stressed that “it is necessary for all of us, as writers, journalists, and media outlets, to work to reduce the speed at which print newspapers are disappearing.”
