Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, confirmed during his meeting with Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari, today, Sunday, that Tehran expects Iraq to completely disarm groups hostile to the regime.
According to Fars News Agency, the meeting came on the sidelines of the start of the academic year for Iranian and foreign students at the National Defense University.
Asher Bagheri explained the agreement last March between the secretaries of the Supreme National Security Council of the two countries regarding providing border security, complete disarmament, and transferring anti-regime groups from Iran’s borders.
Bagheri described the measures taken as “good and at the same time insufficient,” noting that “transferring anti-regime groups to areas far from the borders of the Republic is praiseworthy, but we expect them to be completely disarmed in accordance with the agreement.”
The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces also considered that “educational cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries at various levels, especially the university level, is necessary and leads to rapprochement and strengthening security in the two countries and the region.”
In turn, the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, expressed his appreciation to the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces and the Presidency of the Supreme University of National Defense for hosting the Iraqi army students. He also provided clarifications about the border situation between the two countries, especially in the Kurdistan region, and the increase in border posts and surveillance equipment.
On Monday (October 2, 2023), the Iranian government issued a preliminary assessment regarding the security agreement with Iraq, which concerns the presence of separatist groups in the Kurdistan region, while indicating that the agreement has not been fully implemented.
The Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, during his meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Qassem Al-Araji, on Sunday (October 1, 2023), stressed the necessity of implementing the security agreement with Iraq accurately and completely, considering this to guarantee the establishment of security on the borders between the two countries.
