Specialists in political and international affairs believe that Iraq must take proactive and serious steps to defend its regional borders and the necessity of activating bilateral committees between Iraq and Turkey with the aim of addressing concerns about the borders. The specialists also expressed their support for the idea and proposal of concluding a security agreement with Ankara similar to the one signed with Tehran, despite their acknowledgment of the complexity of the circumstances. This file is compared to the border file with Iran.
Political affairs analyst, Omar Al-Nasser, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “In accordance with the urgent regional and international changes and after the war broke out in Gaza, today it has become necessary for Iraq to take a serious step towards proactive action to defend its regional borders from outside the country.” Its lands, as some countries do, in order to achieve complete stability for national security and to get rid of the chronic headache that has been going on for a long time.”
He explained, “National security stability in Iraq can only be achieved through two fundamental points: The first is the necessity of having a real will to reach political consensus to reinforce the constitutional article that stipulates that (Iraq shall not be a launching pad for aggression against any neighboring country), for the purpose of cutting off all pretexts and pretexts taken by those countries in violating Iraqi sovereignty, so that we can achieve political gains that are in the interest of The Iraqi national interest is in its main title (not nationalism) in its sub-titles, and we block the way for Turkey and Iran to prevent the repeated violation of sovereignty and incursion into deep Iraq for legitimate and illegitimate goals.”
He explained that the second point to achieve national security stability; It lies in qualitative diplomatic action with Ankara to sign a bilateral security agreement similar to what was signed with Tehran, the first of which was achieved by evacuating members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq to Albania in 2016 in agreement with the United Nations, which will limit the presence of foreign opposition movements from taking up military headquarters. “Inside Iraq, with international and regional complicity, it is used as a pressure card and an attempt to impose dictates and bargains and discourage political decision-making in Baghdad.”
For his part, an analyst in international political affairs, Dr. Haider Salman, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “Iraq is seeking a security agreement with Turkey similar to the agreement with Iran to maintain border security.”
He pointed out that “the security agreement that Iraq seeks with Turkey is difficult; This is due to the geographical nature of the region and the presence of valleys in addition to the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and their presence on the Iraqi side of the border since 1983 and their mixing with the population and the intermarrying of their individuals, and thus the matter has become complicated. On the other hand, these areas are much farther away from the issue of Iraqi security from the Sulaymaniyah side. ", noting that "agreeing with (the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Parti) is almost impossible, as it considers these borders exclusively its borders and an agreement must be made with it directly."
Salman stressed, “The matter now depends on what the results of the security agreement will produce, especially since the agreement may be heading towards Sulaymaniyah, which cannot be praised until some time has passed.”
