The Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan region of Iraq said on Saturday that it will not withdraw from the lands it regained from the “Islamic State” organization after battles with it in four northern provinces until the threat of the extremist organization has completely disappeared.
The Ministry of Kurdish Peshmerga in the Kurdistan region of Iraq announced today, Saturday (August 20), that it will not withdraw from the lands it controlled after battles with the so-called “Islamic State” organization in four governorates in the north of the country until the threat of the extremist organization has passed.
The ministry said in a statement, “We are part of the Iraqi defense system according to the Iraqi constitution, although the Iraqi government did not help the Peshmerga in terms of providing training or securing weapons and military supplies, and did not assume its responsibilities towards the Peshmerga.”
She added, "The Peshmerga has no intention of taking control of any area, but it will defend every area where ISIS terrorists are present, and it will remain in those areas until the ISIS threat to it ends."
It is noteworthy that the Kurdish Peshmerga forces took control of the entire Kirkuk Governorate after the jihadist attack in June 2014. They also imposed a fait accompli policy on vast areas in northern Diyala Governorate and parts of Salah al-Din and Nineveh Governorates, and subjected them to the control of the region, which has enjoyed autonomous rule since 1990.
Later, the Kurdistan Regional Presidency issued a statement about what is currently being circulated about the Battle of Mosul, in which it confirmed that “the war against the terrorist organization ISIS is a priority for the Kurdistan Regional Presidency.” The Presidency indicated “the need for there to be political agreements between the components of Nineveh Governorate for the period after the expulsion of ISIS, to prevent a recurrence of what happened previously and to create reassurance in the souls of everyone.”
It is noteworthy that the Iraqi forces are engaged in battles in the areas south of the city of Mosul and are preparing to engage in battles to liberate Nineveh Governorate, the second largest governorate in Iraq, its capital Mosul and the main stronghold of the “Islamic State” organization, while the Kurds are attacking this region from the north.
