The Ministry of Agriculture said that it may review its agricultural plan this year based on rain updates, noting that it was able to distribute compensation and entitlements to farmers for water, fish, and rain damage.
The Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki, explained in an interview with Al-Sabah, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that “the size of the lands in the 2024 plan approved by the Council of Ministers was 4 million dunums for lands dependent on wells and one and a half million dunums for irrigated lands.” Stating that "the Ministry will review the plan in the middle of next month in the event of rain and an increase in water flows, and the cultivated area may increase by adding two million dunams for semi-rainfed lands."
Al-Maliki added, "According to the decisions of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry has taken upon itself to compensate fish breeders with 8 billion dinars, rain compensation with 216 billion dinars, and compensation for watermelon farmers with 136 billion dinars, as the total compensation reached 400 billion dinars," indicating that "the Ministry distributed... Compensation for the hawthorn among eligible farmers for the governorates of Samawah, Najaf, and Diwaniyah, along with direct compensation for fish, most of which are from Babylon. Compensations for Anbar and flood dues, which include the governorates of Amara, Basra, Nasiriyah, Samawah, and Diwaniyah, will begin to be distributed next week.
He pointed out that "the Ministry formed a special committee to study the high prices of table eggs and fish and was able to close and fill the illegal lakes as a result of water scarcity, and corrected the high prices by opening the import of live fish," pointing out that "the Ministry purchased corn feed in quantities exceeding 500 million tons in the last period and distributed it." Among livestock breeders.
Regarding the requirements of animal breeders, the Minister of Agriculture said: “We presented a set of points to the Economic Ministerial Council, including reducing the price of electricity and fuel tariffs to support livestock breeders with the aim of reaching fair prices for livestock breeders and citizens alike.”
