    Zagros Arabia - Erbil

In order to provide more services to citizens, the Kurdistan Regional Government continues to work on reforming the health sector, including 70 private hospitals, 167 centers, and 32 medical complexes.

The most prominent of these reforms include regulating the working hours of doctors and employees, employing graduates of medical colleges, adjusting treatment fees, determining drug prices, and organizing the work of foreign medical teams.

In this context, Sarhang Gumbaz, Director of the Planning Department at the Ministry of Health, told the Media and Information Department: “There are currently 70 private hospitals in the Kurdistan Region, more than 167 different health centers, and 32 medical complexes, all of which have undergone reforms, and this has led to many Citizens to private hospitals, in addition to the fact that many people come from outside the cities of the region to obtain medical treatment in our hospitals and health centers.”

He added, "The private health sector in the Kurdistan Region continues to expand, and we in the Ministry of Health care about this sector and support it to the utmost extent possible, noting that a new administration has been established for the private health sector," noting that "previously, there was only one department in the Ministry of Health that followed up on health matters." The private sector, but due to expansion, we created a private department and strengthened it with an integrated staff, which contributed to the development of that sector day after day.”

He continued, "In the past, private hospitals did not have their own staff, but now we have issued instructions stipulating that doctors and employees who work in a specific hospital are not allowed to work in another hospital after the official working hours."

The Ministry of Health obligated the private sector to employ 50% of health professionals who were not appointed in government hospitals, as the Director General of the Ministry’s Planning Department said, “We have worked to find job opportunities for graduates of medical departments, in hospitals and private centers. At the same time, we seek This percentage will increase year after year.

Regarding the fees for performing surgeries, Gambaz said, “We have formed a higher committee in the Ministry of Health whose mission is to review prices to determine the fees for each surgical operation. This committee has been working on that for a long time and has now reached the final stages of setting prices in hospitals, so that the prices in hospitals are "Unified despite the difficulties surrounding this matter."

He added, "Another committee was formed whose task was to rank and classify hospitals similar to hotels, by setting a number of criteria to determine the number of stars for each hospital. These criteria include the cost of accommodation, fees for surgical operations, and quality of services."

He pointed out, "Foreign doctors can come to the region, and we have issued instructions regarding the work controls for foreign doctors who come with their own teams. This includes only those who have long experience in their field of specialization or whose specialties are rare so that our patients do not have to travel abroad to receive treatment." Therefore, they will receive treatment in the region’s hospitals at a lower cost and effort. On the other hand, there should be a team of local doctors alongside foreign doctors when performing surgical operations in order to benefit from their expertise.”
