    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (November 3, 2023), Member of Parliament Adnan Al-Juhaishi revealed the contents of the project to build comprehensive complexes in Iraq for drug users, while noting that it will address 3 problems in the drug file to eliminate it.
Al-Juhaishi told "Baghdad Today", "Combating the drug scourge in Iraq is an integrative issue through three important dimensions that must be present in a manner appropriate to the danger of this scourge, which constitutes a global concern in light of the presence of multinational mafias trying to spread it in countries."
He added, "Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani approved the comprehensive complexes project and directed the allocation of 10 dunams in each governorate in order to build a drug control directorate, a parking lot, a clinic, and other departments within the framework of an objective vision to address the drug file in its stages."

    Strategy for treating "addicts"
Al-Juhaishi pointed out that "the existence of a sanatorium that treats addicts is a strategic necessity, in addition to a situation in which traders and promoters are isolated from the rest of the accused, because their mixing creates major problems and transmits the scourge to others."
He continued, "The Narcotics Control Committee is following up on Al-Sudani's decisions through direct meetings with the governors to accelerate the pace of work in the comprehensive complexes."
    Government decision
Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani directed to discuss the establishment of centers to rehabilitate drug users in all governorates. He also directed to tighten scrutiny and procedures at border crossings, to prevent any violation in this area, as well as to emphasize the Ministries of Education to carry out awareness-raising roles about the dangers of these toxins. and its destructive effects on society.
Al-Sudani pointed out "the necessity of continuing meetings between officials and representatives of agencies concerned with combating drugs, which is a challenge that the state must face with its full capabilities."
    Addiction treatment
Regarding the number of people treated for addiction by health authorities, the mental health advisor at the Ministry of Health, Imad Abdel Razzaq, explained in a press interview that 4,500 drug addicts and users have been treated since the beginning of 2022, noting that most of the users are between 15 and 30 years old.
For its part, the Narcotics Control Directorate confirmed the arrest of more than 15,000 drug suspects during the past year, while quantities estimated at half a ton of drugs were seized, noting that crystal narcotic substances enter illegally from several border governorates.
After 2003, Iraq transformed from a crossing point for the transfer of drugs to a consumer, according to security authorities, especially since most of the Iraqi borders and land crossings include a large number of security-fragile areas, into which various types of drugs leak throughout the day.
