The number of people accused of human trafficking, organ selling, and begging who were arrested by the Organized Crime Directorate reached 446 defendants from the beginning of this year until the end of last October.
This was reported by the Director of Operations at the Directorate affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Hussein Al-Tamimi, in a statement to Al-Sabah, explaining that the arrest of the accused during the aforementioned period came in order to reduce all crimes of human trafficking, organ selling, and begging, which are closely linked to each other and managed by organized gangs.
He revealed that recently, multiple categories have emerged that have become part of the activity of begging, which is a form of human exploitation and trafficking, indicating that the categories include infants, young children, and young people, in addition to women, the elderly, and the disabled, noting that the matter did not stop there, but rather increased to Involving people with special needs in this field.
Al-Tamimi stated that there are people who are experienced in this activity and they form organized gangs that push these groups into intersections and public roads for the purpose of collecting money in exchange for providing them with housing, food, clothing and a little something, which falls within the crimes of human trafficking, specifying the penalty for human trafficking in accordance with Law No. 28 of the year 2012, imprisonment for 15 years, with cases in which a life sentence is imposed.
He pointed to a number of measures taken by the Ministry and through the Directorate, the most important of which was the formation of a joint committee that carried out intensive campaigns to arrest beggars and hold them legally accountable, revealing that a number of those who were arrested were of Asian nationalities who entered the country during religious visits and remained inside the country until the period expired.
