The Hungarian newspaper “Hungary Today” reported that the Hungarian Ministry of Defense requested to extend the mission of the Hungarian soldiers stationed in the Kurdistan Region, for an additional period extending until December 31, 2025, in compliance with the mission of the “NATO” alliance as well as within the framework of work to address issues “Migration and terrorism” linked to each other.
The Hungarian report explained that the Hungarian force may serve for a longer period in Iraq in the context of combating ISIS, as Defense Minister Krzysztof Szálai Bobrovnitsky, on behalf of the government, presented an amendment proposal related to the Hungarian military role in Iraq.
The report indicated that, based on the proposal presented by the Minister of Defense, up to 20 soldiers (40 in the transitional phase) will serve in international operations against ISIS within a mission that will continue until December 31, 2025.
The report quoted Minister Bobrovinsky as saying that Hungary, as an important member of NATO, will continue to contribute to the alliance’s common defense missions and joint action against terrorism.
According to the Hungarian Defense Minister, the Hungarian government’s position remains clear, which is centered around curbing migration affecting Europe and that this problem is being addressed locally, adding that “immigration and terrorism go hand in hand, as ISIS fighters come to European cities and reach the southern borders of Hungary.” .
Therefore, the Minister stressed the importance of reducing migration and terrorism and extending the role of the Hungarian Defense Forces in Iraq until December 31, 2025.
The report pointed out that according to previous arrangements, the service of Hungarian soldiers in Iraq was supposed to continue until December 31, 2023.
Based on the proposal now presented, the Hungarian military force will also participate in anti-terrorism coalition operations, through partnership building, military support, advisory and military escort missions.
The Hungarian report stated that Hungarian soldiers have been serving in the Kurdistan Region since August 25, 2015 as part of the international mission against ISIS. He pointed out that the Hungarian Parliament is expected to take a decision on the proposal submitted by the Minister of Defense later this year.
