The framework in the American bombing crisis is trying to hold the stick from the middle
Baghdad/ Tamim Al-Hassan
Baghdad speaks two languages with the crisis of bombing the camps and the recent American response to the Hashd; One language is calming, and the other is escalating.
This duality seems reasonable if there is what the Shiite forces call “resistance,” but it may be impossible to separate those groups from those participating in the government. Therefore, according to what a well-known politician says, Shiite parties are making great efforts and spending “millions of dollars” to persuade Washington not to respond or expand it.
Last Wednesday, Washington modified the rules of engagement in Iraq and targeted points belonging to the Hezbollah Brigades south of Baghdad.
This shift came after the escalation of attacks by the so-called “Iraqi resistance” on American forces’ positions, which amounted to more than 30 attacks within one month.
In the first response from a senior Iraqi official to the faction attacks, Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari said that the authorities “thwarted a number of attacks on the sites of international coalition advisors.” Al-Shammari added in an interview with Al-Arabiya channel that “rocket launching pads were seized” targeting those camps.
Al-Shammari’s words agree with the information obtained by Al-Mada one day before the recent attack on Wednesday.
The information at the time said that Iraqi and American intelligence services were “cooperating undeclaredly to stop the attacks, and they had already succeeded in thwarting the attacks.”
But it does not seem that this action was sufficient or satisfactory to the American side, which was eventually forced to launch strikes on the positions of the Hezbollah Brigades in Jurf al-Sakhar, north of Babylon.
Political sources close to the Shiite framework tell Al-Mada that the latter is “trying to hold the stick from the middle” in the recent bombing crisis.
The Popular Mobilization Forces had announced in a statement that the attack on Jurf al-Sakhar resulted in “8 martyrs and 4 wounded.” The sources add, “The coordination framework and the government fear that expanding targeting of the camps may cause the international coalition to leave Iraq, and then we will lose the training and armament programs.”
Most Shiite parties also fear the closure of the American embassy, “which means that the government and the political process are illegitimate,” according to what the sources indicate.
The Shiite forces, which are divided in their discourse, according to what the sources say, believe that these events may threaten to cancel the partnership agreement with Washington, and then Iraq will lose American political, economic, and security protection.
The coordination framework statement, last Wednesday, was a translation of the policy of “holding the stick from the middle,” as the statement adhered to the government’s words about protecting missions.
The Shiite statement condemned the attack on Jurf al-Sakhar, and stressed “commitment to the specific tasks of all forces affiliated with the international coalition in accordance with Iraqi laws.”
On the other hand, the statement, which was held in the absence of Abu Alaa al-Wala’i, the leader of the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades, which Washington recently listed on terrorism lists, praised “the government’s efforts to protect diplomatic missions and security headquarters.”
In a previous statement, the government considered any “armed action or activity committed outside the military institution to be considered a condemnable act and an activity outside the law.”
The statement confirmed that the government was not aware of the attack that was carried out at dawn last Wednesday, and targeted equipment stores for the Hezbollah Brigades, which has controlled “Al-Jarf” for 7 years.
In exchange for the language of calm, the faction leaders, who themselves lead major and major parties in the government, continue to escalate against the United States. Qais Al-Khazali, a leader within the Shiite framework and the leader of Asaib, considered, after the Jurf al-Sakhar incident, the presence of the coalition forces as “not limited to military advice, and that it has fighting forces (referring to the international coalition) that are occupied and reckless.”
Al-Khazali demanded, in a blog post on the
As for the Hezbollah Brigades, which has a faction within the PMF, it called in a statement following the recent American bombing to “expand the circle of targets if the enemy continues its criminal approach.”
Likewise, the Secretary-General of the Al-Nujaba Movement, Akram Al-Kaabi - who also owns a faction within the PMF - called for a “declaration of war” on America and its expulsion from Iraq.
A statement by the movement stated, “It is not possible to accept any American presence in any form, whether in the capacity of combat forces, advisors, or technicians. This is considered a hostile presence from an arrogant state hostile to Iraq.”
The statement pointed out that “the Islamic resistance in Iraq will translate its words and will into the field.”
Meanwhile, politician Mathal Al-Alusi said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that “parties within the framework have large offices and representatives in Washington on whom millions of dollars are spent to market information about calm and the desire for non-escalation.”
Al-Alusi adds that in America, “what these offices say is seen as naive and superficial, and the situation is assessed by the American embassy in Baghdad, and it is not satisfied with what is happening.”
Al-Alusi points out, “The United States does not want escalation, but important circles in Washington believe that Iran’s back must be broken, but where will that happen, in Baghdad or in Tehran?”
The US Central Command statement regarding the recent bombing was that it came “in response to the attacks launched by Iran and groups supported by it against American and coalition forces.”
Iran, on the other hand, said through its ambassador to Baghdad, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, that America’s recent attacks in Iraq are aimed at destabilizing its security and stability.
Al-Alusi, a former MP, says that if the war in Gaza ends, “a new military phase will begin, and the factions in Iraq will not be safe from that.” He also confirms that Iran wants to distance the crisis from it by implicating the Houthis and Iraqis in the war against the United States.
Al-Alusi described the faction attacks as “superficial and of no military or political value,” adding, “The faction attacks put more pressure on Kurdistan and Anbar than Washington.”
Hours after the Jurf al-Sakhar incident, the factions announced the launch of two drone attacks, one targeting the Harir Base and the other at Erbil Airport in northern Iraq.
