12-02-2023 Environment Minister Nizar Amedi called on Saturday for the importance of allocating part of the funds from the Climate Solutions Fund announced at the COP28 conference to Iraq, which is suffering from global warming and drought.
This came in a statement he made to reporters on the sidelines of his attendance at the COP28 conference held in the UAE.
The minister said in his statement that Iraq deserves to be helped, and that the Paris Agreement stipulated that those countries that were the cause of global warming that began with the industrial revolution are responsible for helping the affected countries, and Iraq is among those countries as it was not also the cause of that occurrence. Climate changes in the world.
He explained that the Paris Agreement also stipulated the establishment of a fund, financed by those countries causing global warming to compensate countries affected by this phenomenon that has swept the planet, such as Iraq, which tops the list of those countries, indicating that this paragraph has not yet been implemented, and the countries concerned have not committed to financing it. The fund is at the required level.
He described the initiative of the President of the UAE to establish the Climate Solutions Fund as “very great,” adding that the money that will be allocated to the Fund includes those countries that were not the cause of the current situation that the planet is going through and the resulting catastrophic damage, such as Iraq.
Yesterday, Friday, the President of the UAE announced the establishment of a $30 billion fund for climate solutions worldwide.
Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in an opening speech at the COP28 conference in Dubai that the fund aims to stimulate the collection and investment of $250 billion by 2030, adding that the world faces many challenges, the most important of which is climate change, which has affected aspects of life.
Iraq is among the five countries most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, according to the United Nations.
The World Bank said, at the end of 2022, that Iraq faces an urgent climate challenge that it must confront by moving towards a “greener and more environmentally friendly” development model, especially by diversifying its economy and reducing its dependence on carbon.
According to a report issued by the organization, by the year 2040, “Iraq will need $233 billion in investments to respond to its most urgent development needs as it embarks on greener and more comprehensive growth,” which is equivalent to 6% of its annual gross domestic product.
