    On Monday, Minister of Water Resources Aoun Dhiab Abdullah expected the volume of water reserves to rise to 15 billion cubic meters next summer, while indicating the preparation of a strategic plan that includes the construction of 6 dams to “harvest water” in the coming years.
    Abdullah said in a press interview followed by Al-Eqtisad News, “It is expected that the volume of water reserves will increase during next summer, until the first of next June, to 15 billion cubic metres, thus exceeding the stage of water scarcity during next summer, due to the lack of water imports.” Coming from Turkey,” denying “the existence of an expansion of agricultural areas within the winter season plan previously agreed upon with the Ministry of Agriculture, with an area of ​​4 million dunums, depending on groundwater.”
    Abdullah revealed, "Allocating one million and 500 thousand dunums for growing wheat crops, depending on surface water," stressing at the same time, "Preparing a plan to secure drinking water, human uses, and irrigation of crops."
    He pointed out that "the country will witness rain during the coming period in all governorates, in addition to snowfall in the northern regions, which will constitute a great asset to enhance the dams' water and turn it into water storage after it melts in the next spring season."
    He continued, "There are more than 30 dams currently harvesting water, including those located in the western and eastern sides of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, and Kirkuk governorates, in addition to the southern and northern deserts, the Samawa desert, Najaf, Ramadi, and Houran."
    Abdullah noted "preparing a strategic plan that includes constructing between 5-6 dams to harvest water in the coming years, which will contribute to storing flood torrents, enhancing groundwater, and stabilizing the pastoral communities that inhabit the desert."
