Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The Integrity Commission in Iraq opens an expanded investigation into allegations of buying MPs’ votes to support a specific candidate for the presidency of Parliament, while legal expert Ali Al-Tamimi confirms the presence of legal violations during the session to elect the Speaker of Parliament, noting that the Federal Court may cancel the membership of any MP who received money. In exchange for voting for one of the candidates.
Al-Tamimi points out that the court emphasized the necessity of electing the Speaker of Parliament at an appropriate time and during one session, and stresses that its decisions are binding on all authorities in Iraq.
The Taqadum Party may face a resounding loss if the Federal Court decides to cancel Shaalan Al-Karim’s nomination for the position of Speaker of Parliament, based on legal motives related to accountability and justice.
The candidacy for the Presidency of Parliament may be repeated again in the event that a judicial decision is issued to cancel the Parliament session that witnessed the nomination of some figures, thus opening the way for re-nomination again.
Following the elections for the presidency of Parliament, the political arena in Iraq is witnessing sharp developments and an escalation in political tension, especially after work on an expanded investigation into allegations of buying votes to support one of the candidates for the presidency of Parliament. This event is not just a development in political events, but a strong indication of the challenges of the country's democratic system.
At a time when citizens expect the parliamentary presidential elections to be an opportunity to achieve true representation and choose effective leaders, attempts to buy votes appear as a blow to the foundations of the democratic process.
Correct political representation requires the integrity of the electoral process, and this constitutes the foundation on which any democratic system is built. But what Iraq is witnessing today appears to be a setback to these values, as reports appear about vote buying and manipulation of the electoral process.
It is worth noting that the impact of Federal Court decisions can be decisive in this context. If representatives are confirmed to have received money for their votes, their membership may be revoked in accordance with the law and the Constitution. This decision may be a harsh lesson for those trying to distort the election process.
Further investigations and verification of complaints submitted to the Integrity Commission must play a vital role in restoring confidence in the political process. If it turns out that there was real involvement in vote buying, this poses a major challenge to the future of democracy in Iraq.
