The Ministry of Agriculture expected that the modern irrigation systems, after distributing them among farmers, would contribute to raising the percentage of exploited lands to 14 million dunams.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” followed by Mawazine News: “The Ministry previously focused on irrigated lands, because the agricultural plans amounted to 5 million dunams in the least circumstances,” noting that “and after... The lack of water revenues, climate change, and the wave of drought that struck Iraq in recent years, the Ministry moved towards using modern irrigation systems in irrigated and irrigated areas.”
He stated that "the Ministry focused on distributing the systems on fertile desert lands designated for growing grain crops and fodder crops such as barley, and they were used in the summer season to grow yellow corn using drip irrigation and fixed sprinklers."
Al-Jubouri pointed out that "these systems added large desert areas in addition to irrigated areas, which we expected to exceed the number for previous years, in addition to the guaranteed and semi-guaranteed amount of rain, which amounts to 11 million dunums."
The agent expected that “the exploited lands would reach about 14 million dunams, if these systems were distributed among a large percentage of farmers,” noting that “the switch to modern irrigation will add large areas with the least amounts of water and the highest productivity.”
