Today, Sunday (February 11, 2024), the Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee commented on Iraq’s ability to protect its airspace from drones and missiles after the withdrawal of the international coalition during the coming period.
Committee member Ali Al-Saadi told “Baghdad Today” that “Iraq cannot protect its airspace from drones and missiles unless it possesses modern and advanced air defense systems that can monitor any suspicious movements in the airspace, and Iraq does not currently possess these capabilities, even in light of the presence of the international coalition.” .
Al-Saadi stated, “The international coalition is currently present in Iraq, and Iraq’s sovereignty is being repeatedly violated by Washington, Turkey, and Iran. This confirms that the international coalition does not have the ability to protect Iraqi airspace, which it repeatedly violates, and therefore the withdrawal of this coalition will not affect On Iraq's security and military situation.
Two days ago, the Iraqi government began a new round of negotiations with the international coalition with the aim of evaluating its role in the last stage in preparation for withdrawing its forces from Iraq, in light of the escalation in the intensity of the American strikes targeting the headquarters and leaders of the Iraqi resistance factions and the Popular Mobilization Forces, the most recent of which was targeting the leader of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, Abu Baqir Al-Saadi was killed in an air strike east of the capital, Baghdad, last week.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasoul, previously announced the date for the resumption of the bilateral military committee to end the presence of the international coalition.
Rasoul said in a brief statement, “To discuss and schedule the end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq, the Supreme Bilateral Military Technical Committee between Iraq and the United States of America will resume its work next Sunday (today).
In turn, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that, based on a directive from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicated with the American side about returning to the dialogue table, and the two parties reached the decision to continue the negotiation sessions within the framework of the Supreme Joint Military Committee.
On January 27, the Joint Military Committee began its first meeting in the capital, Baghdad, as the media office of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani published a photo of the first meeting, in which senior commanders of the Iraqi army, security services, and leaders of the international coalition, which includes dozens of foreign countries, participated.
