    Baghdad today - follow-up
The upcoming visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq has many dimensions, most of which revolve around trying to determine the degree of Tehran’s influence in Baghdad.
The Russian newspaper "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" indicated, in a report, today, Thursday (March 21, 2024), that Turkey is not against Iran's participation in discussions on issues related to Iraq, and that its Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, stated this in response to the visit of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. To Baghdad, scheduled for next April.
The newspaper continued: "The visit will not only focus on expanding the area of operations against Kurdistan Workers' Party ( PKK ) fighters , but also on economic cooperation between the two neighbors in regional projects."
It quoted an expert in Middle East affairs, Anton Mardasov, as saying, “The intensification of Turkish diplomacy in the Iraqi direction, including talks on the economic “development road” project, the implementation of which there are serious doubts about, has one goal, which is to prepare for a new military operation in Iraq. "Which will not be limited to air strikes and attacks launched by special forces."
She added: "It is clear that Türkiye decided to take advantage of the favorable situation for it."
According to the newspaper, after the change of prime minister, “Iraq lost its position as a regional negotiating platform, and almost all Gulf countries froze cooperation with it, due to its consideration of the interests of Tehran and the Popular Mobilization Forces, and Ankara is exploiting the timing correctly.”
She says it is clear that Türkiye is trying to find consensus with Iran. “It views the PKK as a threat, but in reality it maintains contacts with it, extending to Syria, and it is clear that the PKK has strengthened its position in Sulaymaniyah in the past year, with its permission.” According to her claim.
She continued: "They may be able to reach some agreement, but Tehran will take into account its own vision of the development of the situation, especially since the PKK has moved to the Iranian side of the Qandil Mountains."
Earlier, the Arabi 21 electronic newspaper reported, citing local Iraqi sources, that there are preparations to carry out the largest Turkish military operation in northern Iraq to create a buffer zone from the Kurdistan region.
The newspaper said in a report that the shuttle visits between Iraqi and Turkish officials represent the calm before the storm. According to observers, they carry with them preparations for a major military operation, including border areas in Iraq and Syria.
A few days ago, a high-ranking Turkish delegation visited Iraq, which included Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yaşar Yuler, and Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin, where they were met by Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Defense, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Security, the head of the Popular Mobilization Forces, and the Deputy Director of the Intelligence Agency. Minister of Interior in the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The sources stated that the state administration coalition, which consists of representatives of the Shiite, Sunni, and Kurdish parties, is ready to provide political support for this process in exchange for larger deals with other joint files such as water and energy.
The newspaper quoted a source who refused to reveal his name, saying that Erbil will participate in the operation, and it may be the "Roj Peshmerga" forces, who are from northeastern Syria fleeing the war. Erbil has trained and funded them for years, and they participated in operations against ISIS while threatening it. The region is one of the military formations participating in the operation alongside the Popular Mobilization Forces.
