The Minister of Transport reveals the completion rates of rail and land connectivity plans for the development road
The Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibes Al-Saadawi, announced the approval of 10 governorates on the path of the development road, and while he indicated that this approval is considered final, he revealed the completion rates of the railway and land connection plans for the road, pointing at the same time to studying the draft of the Al-Faw Economic City project.
Al-Saadawi said, “The Supreme Committee for the Development Road held a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani recently, and we reviewed the latest developments in the Development Road project and the governorates that approved the route of the road and the governorates that did not ratify,” noting, “The Prime Minister directed an urgent meeting with the governorates that did not ratify.” On the track, which is Basra, Holy Karbala, and Baghdad, the meeting was held and we entered into in-depth discussions with the three governorates, especially Basra.”
He added, “The meeting was held and the final route was approved by Basra Governorate for the development road project, which extends from the large port of Al-Faw, crossing the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, then the city of Umm Qasr, crossing the international highway and passing north of the city of Safwan,” pointing out, “There was an objection from The people of the city of Safwan followed the previous path, and they chose the path that was approved, which is for the project to pass north of the city of Safwan outside the municipal borders. Thus, we have completed all the observations made by Basra Governorate and reached a final agreement for the path.”
He stated, “The governorates’ approval of the path of development is considered final,” pointing out, “This amendment does not conflict with the legitimate paths drawn by the Italian Chancellor.” Because we had discussed the proposed paths with the advisor before they were approved by us and Basra Governorate.”
He stressed that “the work is taking place at an upward and good pace and according to the set timelines,” noting that “the number of governorates that have approved the course of the project is 10 governorates, starting with Basra, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Diwaniyah, Najaf Al-Ashraf, Holy Karbala, Babylon, Baghdad, Salah al-Din, and Nineveh, and nothing remains.” Except for one governorate, which is Dohuk.”
He stated, “This approval will contribute to accelerating the process of completing the initial designs for the development road project, which is the railway, for which the completion rate of the initial plans exceeded 70 percent, and the highway, for which the completion rate of the initial plans exceeded 60 percent.”
Regarding soil tests, Al-Saadawi confirmed that “soil tests have been completed for more than a thousand kilometers,” explaining that “the presence of the Prime Minister at the head of the higher committee formed for the development road gave great momentum and support to the project.” Because the project is a project for the entire Iraqi state and not a ministry project, and therefore it needs direct supervision and support by the Prime Minister.”
He stated, “The presence of the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Development Road Project enabled the Ministry of Transport, the work team, and the Italian consulting company to resolve all the required issues and tasks before the specified timings, and thus we are moving in the right direction and according to the planned schedule,” pointing to, “Study of the draft of the Al-Faw Economic City project.” During the last meeting of the Supreme Committee of the Development Road Project.”
He stated, “We will work to prepare the draft so that the development road project is integrated with all its components, including the Al-Faw port, the railway road, and the highway, and that it will have special authority and laws for its management that will facilitate the process of investment, industrial cities, and other projects, whether in the Al-Faw peninsula or along the path of the project from FAO to Turkey, as well as the management of industrial cities.”
He pointed out, “The development road project has become a real and realistic project, especially after the completion of the governorates’ approvals on the final path.”
He stated, “The economic feasibility of the project has been approved, the final path of the project has been approved, and soil testing for more than a thousand kilometers has been completed,” explaining, “We are awaiting the complete completion of soil tests; To enter into the final planning process for the project and then start announcing the project clips with the aim of starting implementation.”
