The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, is working to contain the growing problems between Baghdad and Kurdistan, with the decisions of the Federal Court regarding employee salaries and local elections in the region. The visit also comes days before the Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani goes to Washington, where he is holding discussions with the US administration headed by Joe Biden.
Barzani held discussions upon his arrival in Baghdad today, Saturday, with Al-Sudani, in which he discussed the government program and the implementation of political agreements, in addition to resolving the problems related between Baghdad and Erbil, most notably the oil files, the budget, and employee salaries.
“Solving problems according to agreements”
In this regard, Kurdistan Regional Presidency spokesman Dilshad Shihab says, “The meeting mainly discussed the implementation of the agreement under which the current government was formed, which is based on a political agreement between the parties of the state administration coalition. This agreement includes the administrative, political and legislative fields and relations in the economic field, oil and natural resources.” In addition to security files and coordination between the two sides. We cannot say that the agreement program was fully implemented, or that nothing of it was implemented.”
He added that President Nechirvan Barzani confirmed in the meeting that the region was and is still supporting the federal prime minister in implementing this program, and he also emphasized finding an appropriate mechanism to resolve issues related to the Kurdistan region, and this will be a reason for the stability of Iraq and the attainment of constitutional rights for the people of Kurdistan.
Shehab continued that the two sides agreed “to implement this program and steps have been taken for that, and even if there is a delay or obstruction, what is important is that there is a strong will by the Federal Prime Minister to implement the program as it is, and the President of the region expressed his support for the success of the program and spoke of the importance of the step.” Which was taken to solve the problem of the salaries of the region’s employees, and it is a result of the discussions that took place and the exchange of visits between the delegations of the region’s government, the federal government, and the region’s president, who thanked the federal prime minister for his cooperation in solving these problems. The latter also stressed his appreciation for the support of the region’s president and appreciated his role as a factor of stability in Iraq and a factor. Effective in strengthening relations between all parties, between the institutions of the Kurdistan Region and the federal institutions.”
“In general, all issues related to the judicial field, legislation, and issuances of basic laws related to all of Iraq or pertaining to the Kurdistan Region, in addition to the Federal Court Law, the Oil and Gas Law, and the Federal Council are present in the State Administration Coalition Agreement, and part of them are in government programs, and they were voted on by the Council Representatives, so solving these problems in general was the main focus in confirming the implementation of the government program, and that the two sides agreed to implement it and take steps towards resolving the problems,” says the spokesman for the region’s presidency.
Shehab also stressed that “the Federal Prime Minister stressed the effective and influential role of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, in bringing the views together in a way that refutes the belief that instability on one side is good for the other side, as instability in the Kurdistan Region will have a direct impact on the situation in Iraq and vice versa, so there is only one way, which is to agree on issues and solve problems, and Mr. Sudanese appreciates the role of the president of the region in developing these relations.”
Regarding Sudanese’s visit to Washington, Shehab said: This visit is important and its importance has been talked about, and that it should be in the interest of Iraq with all its components, citizens, land and sovereignty in this complex situation that the region is going through in general, in addition to protecting the security and stability of Iraq, and that it should not be part of Problems in the region. Relations between the United States and Iraq are important and have an impact on all aspects, especially since Iraq has a role in international and regional equations.”
Regarding the parliamentary elections file in Kurdistan, Shehab said that this is an internal issue for the Kurdistan Region, and it is true that the federal institutions have a role in supporting the Commission and providing the appropriate ground, but holding the elections and their date is an internal issue, and talking about it is not related to other parties, as everyone confirms his support for holding it. The elections, but the mechanism and date of their completion are related to the Kurdistan Region, and they must be discussed between the Kurdistan political parties and the official institutions in the region, and an attempt to find an appropriate solution for them.
He said, “There is a common goal for everyone, which is the necessity of holding elections, and the correct approach for the regional presidency is for the parties to reach an appropriate formula, and any step taken by the region’s presidency so far on the issue of elections was in consultation with all parties, and it will also be in the future.
