Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: In an upcoming meeting considered decisive for the future of Iraqi-American relations, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, will meet with the US President, Joe Biden, at the White House on the 15th of this month.
The upcoming talks focus on the strategic relationship between Washington and Baghdad, in light of the escalating demands for the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq and the reduction of security and military cooperation with the United States.
This meeting comes at a time when the Iraqi government is suffering from internal tensions and external pressures, amid escalating popular protests and increasing regional tensions.
For their part, the Iraqi factions and armed groups are looking at the results of the talks with anticipation, as they could affect their position on the truce with the American forces in Iraq.
The Iraqi government faces several challenges, including controlling the security situation and enhancing political stability, amid escalating tensions with Iran and the challenges of reconstruction.
For his part, US President Joe Biden is seeking to benefit from the visit electorally, as he seeks to calm the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, and may make promises regarding the withdrawal of US forces.
On the other hand, Al-Sudani seeks to achieve political and economic gains during his visit to Washington, with the aim of enhancing his chances of obtaining a second term in power.
Expectations of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq raise great doubts, as the United States knows that the withdrawal may increase Iran’s influence in the region and make Iraq fully part of the Iranian axis.
The question about the fate of Iraqi-American relations remains pending, amid the internal and external challenges facing the two countries, and the factions and armed groups awaiting the results of the main meeting.
All revenues from Iraqi oil sales, which amount to more than $100 billion annually, are kept in the Iraqi government’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York, and the Central Bank of Iraq then transfers the dollars the government needs, some of them in cash, to Baghdad for distribution by Ministry of Finance.
The Biden administration has restricted these transfers in the past 18 months because it says the Iraqi financial system is too open to money laundering and illicit flows of dollars to Iran and other countries and individuals and entities subject to sanctions.
If the visit between the Iraqi president and the American president fails, this may have negative effects on the bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States and on the political and security situation in Iraq in general. The failure of the visit may lead to an increase in internal tensions in Iraq, especially if the government had bet on the achievement. internally in many areas. The failure of the meeting may open the door to escalating regional tensions, especially with Iran, which may exploit the vacuum resulting from faltering relations between Iraq and the United States.
The failure of the meeting is reflected in the economic situation in Iraq, especially if there are expectations of economic support from the United States.
The failure of the visit will lead to political instability in Iraq and the escalation of internal conflicts between the various factions and parties.
