Shafaq News/ The Israeli website "Ynet" reported on Saturday that US President Joe Biden will raise with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani the issue of Israeli Elizabeth Tsurkov, who was kidnapped in Iraq, and will urge him with a "private and personal" request to take action in order to work towards her release.
The Israeli report quoted a high-ranking American official as saying that Biden is closely monitoring the situation and will urge Al-Sudani to locate Tsurkov and ensure her quick release.
According to the report, which was published in English and translated by Shafaq News Agency, Biden will personally demand that Sudanese release the Israeli citizen Tsurkov immediately, during their upcoming joint meeting at the White House next Monday.
The high-ranking American source said that Biden is closely following the situation, and he strongly condemns her kidnapping, and will urge Al-Sudani to accelerate efforts to locate Tsurkov and ensure her speedy release.
Tsurkov was kidnapped in March 2023, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and her kidnapping was officially revealed after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, last July, accused the Hezbollah Brigades of kidnapping her.
In mid-July 2023, Israeli Channel 12 reported, citing unidentified Arab sources, that Tsurkov was the one who took the initiative to meet her kidnappers in Iraq, as part of the preparation of her doctoral thesis.
In mid-November, Iraqi media outlets affiliated with Shiite armed groups published a video clip of the kidnapped Israeli-Russian academic in Iraq, Elizabeth Tsurkov.
Tsurkov is conducting her doctoral research on Shiite movements in Iraq, and focuses specifically on the group of prominent cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, according to the Times of Israel, which reported the Israeli news channel’s report.
Tsurkov herself contacted a cleric named Ahmed Alwani, requesting a meeting with his cousin, Muhammad Alwani, a senior official in the Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq, according to Channel 12.
During their second meeting with Tsurkov, the two men discovered that she had Israeli citizenship and decided to kidnap her. After that, attempts were made to apparently transfer her to Iran.
Tsurkov, 36, a Middle East analyst and doctoral student at Princeton University, entered Iraq late last year on her Russian passport before disappearing last March, according to The Times of Israel.
The Iraqi government opened an investigation related to the kidnapping incident, according to what government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi announced, after Israel held Baghdad responsible for the researcher’s safety.
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, held the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades responsible for this case, saying that "Elizabeth Tsurkov, the Israeli-Russian citizen who disappeared a few months ago in Iraq, is being held by the Brigades."
Tsurkov says on her personal website that she speaks four languages: English, Hebrew, Russian, and Arabic.
Her website adds that she is a fellow at the New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy, and a research fellow at the Forum for Regional Thinking, an Israeli-Palestinian think tank based in Jerusalem.
