Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced today, Sunday (April 21, 2024), that more than 20 agreements will be signed with Iraq during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s scheduled visit to the capital, Baghdad, tomorrow, Monday.
Fidan said in a joint press conference with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, after their meeting in Istanbul, “Our goal is to develop relations (with Iraq) so that regional stability, prosperity and development are possible, institutionalize our relations, and do what we can to develop order and prosperity in the region.”
In this context, he pointed to the long-standing ongoing work between the two countries in areas such as security, energy, agriculture, water, agriculture, health and education.
He added, "We completed preliminary agreements to sign more than 20 agreements during our president's visit."
Fidan stated that Erdogan will go to Baghdad and Erbil during his visit to Iraq.
He explained that President Erdogan will meet Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad, where a working meeting will be held, and agreements will be signed after that.
He also pointed out that Erdogan will also meet with the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani announced last Friday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's upcoming visit to Baghdad "will not be a passing visit."
He added, "For the first time, we find there is a real desire between Iraq and Turkey to go for solutions and not transfer files," stressing that he will discuss with the Turkish President the status of treatments for the water file between the two countries.
