Shafaq News/ Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed, on Wednesday, the progress of completing the Al-Faw Grand Port project by the end of 2025.
This came while he was following, via television, the progress of work on the Al-Faw Grand Port project.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani sponsored the signing ceremony of the Al-Faw Refinery Investment Project, one of the major Al-Faw Port projects, between the Ministry of Oil/Southern Refineries Company and the Chinese company (CNCEC), as part of the government’s plan to increase refining capacities in Iraq and attract capital. Foreign companies and the provision of petroleum products locally.
Al-Sudani stressed in his speech on the sidelines of signing the contract that the Al-Faw Integrated Refinery Project is one of the important economic projects for the country, and it supports the refining and petrochemical industries in Iraq. He urged the Chinese company to invest time to accelerate the implementation of this project. He also directed the concerned authorities to provide full support and support to the company. Implemented.
The capacity of the refinery is 300 thousand barrels per day, and it will be constructed in an advanced manner, taking into account international environmental standards, and with modern technology to benefit from petroleum derivatives for the purposes of local consumption and export. It will be implemented in two phases, the first of which includes refinery work, while the second phase includes the construction of a petrochemical complex. With a capacity of 3 million tons annually, in addition to the construction of an electrical station with a capacity of 2000 megawatts, the project also includes the establishment of the FAO Academy for Refinery Technology. To train 5,000 Iraqi cadres who will manage the refinery in the future.
The project will contribute to opening wide doors for local industries that depend on these materials, which is accompanied by an increase in job opportunities for young people and graduates, as well as the possibility of achieving social benefits for developing the areas surrounding the project, building housing units, medical services, technical training centers, as well as sports and social centers, according to a statement. Issued by the Iraqi government.

Al-Sudani had directed, at the end of 2022, to accelerate the pace of work in all the executive paragraphs of the large Al-Faw port, returning it to a project “the size of Iraq and the aspirations of its people.”
The Grand Al-Faw Port is an Iraqi port on the Al-Faw Peninsula, south of Basra Governorate, the southernmost part of the country. Its cost is about 4.6 billion euros, and the estimated capacity of the port is 99 million tons annually, making it one of the largest ports overlooking the Gulf and the tenth largest in the world, and the foundation stone was laid for this. Project on April 5, 2010.
The issue of the Grand Al-Faw Port and the delay in completing it sparked controversy, and representatives accused successive governments of concluding deals with neighboring countries that neglected to establish the port in favor of those countries’ ports.
The project also witnessed some delay after the “suicide” of the technical director of the South Korean company Daewoo, which is implementing the large Al-Faw port project, for mysterious reasons.
