The Ministry of Education launched a program for quality and equitable education in Iraq “ITALEEM” with the aim of reaching more than 100,000 teachers and 30,000
school.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Hussein Sabri Al-Lami, said at the launch ceremony, which “Al-Sabah” attended: “The program, which was launched in cooperation with the European Union, UNESCO, and UNICEF, will support the Ministry’s program and improve the level and quality of performance, which targets more than 10 million students.” ".
Sabri added, "The program will work to strengthen the Ministry's governance by improving policies, planning and management, improving the ability of schools to provide comprehensive and quality education, building teachers' capacities for effective teaching and learning, and enabling the participation of civil society organizations in the education system."
For his part, Chargé d'Affairs at the European Union Representation in Iraq, David Harley, said: "The ITALEEM program is an investment in the country's future, by harnessing data, empowering communities, and supporting education workers."
He explained, "The program is based on utilizing technology to make data-based decisions, strengthen partnerships between the school and the community, prepare teachers for success, and enhance civil society participation with the aim of unleashing the full potential of the education system in Iraq."
In turn, the Director of International and Arab Organizations at the Ministry, Zainab Sakban Abdel Aziz, told “Al-Sabah”: The project aims to develop education and deliver it to disadvantaged children, through cooperation between the Ministry and the above organizations to benefit from the experiences of developed countries in how to organize and provide quality education opportunities for all segments of society. .
She pointed out that the support that the European Union and the aforementioned organizations will provide is limited to developing curricula, training educational staff, and paying attention to programs for children, in addition to following modern management methods in schools, in addition to paying attention to the school environment.
Sakban stated that the project is in line with the government program and the national strategy prepared for the development of education in Iraq between 2023-2031, expecting that the project will contribute to improving the school environment compatible with human rights, in addition to its work on developing professional systems for teachers to ensure the quality of public education.
She stressed that the project includes all governorates, including the Kurdistan region, and will continue from 2024 until October 2027, stressing that it will also work to promote gender equality and strengthen institutional capabilities at the national level, and will also empower all children and adolescents, especially disadvantaged groups (displaced people). Internally, returnees, refugees, children and people with disabilities) have access to comprehensive education.
For his part, UNESCO representative in Iraq, Santosh Khatri, stressed “Iraq’s need to invest in improving the quality of teaching and learning,” guided by “evidence-based educational planning, continuing professional development, supporting teachers, and integrating educational technologies.”
Khatri stated that UNESCO is “committed to supporting the national implementation of the Educational Information Management System, and implementing the Ministry’s plan for capacity development and in-service training for teachers in partnership with the government, development partners and civil society organizations, to achieve the goals set in the National Strategy for Education in Iraq 2022-2031.”
