Linking “development” to “silk”...a future proposal

Experts in transportation and international economics explained the added advantages that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani’s proposal to link the development road to the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative will bring to Iraq, indicating that although the two projects differ in geographical and strategic terms, Iraq can benefit from that connection - if it takes place - by attracting investments. Chinese manufacturing industries and creating a re-export situation to various global markets.
A consultant in international transport economics, Dr. Ziyad Al-Hashemi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “If the proposal of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani is taken into account to link the Iraqi Development Road project with the Chinese Belt and Road project, in terms of linking the corridors and transport paths that start from... Chinese industrial cities through ports by sea towards Western Europe via the Suez Canal. These corridors, whether land or sea, are far from the Iraqi geographical area.
He added: “Through this proposal submitted by the Prime Minister, a kind of integration can occur in the method of development in investment and Chinese strategic partnership inside Iraq in petrochemical and gas projects, as well as projects related to value-added projects that can be benefited from by entering Iraqi oil into the manufacturing and refining industries.” And other industries that can be used to establish factories with expertise and perhaps with joint Iraqi-Chinese financing within the Iraqi geographical area, and to benefit from the land corridor on the road to development in the future to export these products north towards Turkey and from there to European markets or south through the port of Al-Faw towards other markets.” He explained, “These could be potential markets for Iraqi petrochemical products and manufacturing industries that occur as a result of the Iraqi-Chinese integration between the development path and the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.”
For his part, political affairs analyst, Wathiq al-Jabri, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The development road project is a purely Iraqi project, and one of its advantages is linking the East with the West and establishing the localization of industries in Iraq and building economic blocs in the regional region. This is from one side and from another.” another side; This road does not conflict with other international roads, and with regard to the Silk Road - and according to the maps mentioned for the project - it does not pass through Iraq, and this does not mean that Iraq is moving away from international strategic projects and may create a twinning situation with many international projects and may have positive repercussions.” .
He explained, “The development path branches out in the form of networks of lines and railways linked to the regional countries neighboring Iraq, so if there is an Iraqi desire or from the countries participating in the Silk Road; It can be linked from Iraq or from other countries, given that this Silk Road is an important strategic road linking several countries. There can be branches from the development road towards the Silk Road and vice versa, and cooperation will be through the localization of industries in countries and the transfer of Chinese industries that China has expressed its desire to “Settlement of it through the Development Road and the Silk Road with a modern economic vision.”
While the political analyst in international affairs, Dr. Haider Salman, stated in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “Iraq will benefit through the development road, or what is called transit transport, by supplementing the state budget with approximately six billion dollars, and that the Chinese Silk Line will be complementary to the development road project unless The difference between them is that China will control it and will be a part of it
Iraq is the owner of the land.
He noted that “the Sudanese government’s announcement of this proposal to link the Silk Road development road is not surprising, but the nature of control will be by the Chinese powers, which will provide the project with sums to establish industrial cities attached to the Belt Road, which can be invested by China, but with benefits accruing to Iraq.”
