June 7, 2024 Reports:
With every new Hajj season, the scenario of about one-third to half of the members of the House of Representatives, in addition to hundreds of other officials in executive positions going with their families, is repeated, which causes a popular reaction condemning the crowding of representatives and officials with citizens of Iraqi society, who are waiting for several days. Years until they have the opportunity to perform Hajj, while the representative and official go with his family to Hajj on an annual basis, which reduces the quota of pilgrims assigned to Iraq.
While a leader in the “State of Law” coalition points out that members of one of the parliamentary committees are assigned to go to Hajj as part of their parliamentary duties, while a political analyst revealed that about 100 representatives went to Hajj with their families, some with a visa as a gift from the Saudi embassy, and others who had taken from the prescribed quota. The Iraqi Hajj and Umrah Authority distributes many Hajj opportunities without any oversight.
The leader of the “State of Law” coalition, Haider Al-Lami, says, “The representative must take his role, specifically at this historical stage in the history of Iraq, with the presence of many obstructive matters within the dome of the House of Representatives for more than 6 months, and the representative must feel responsible, and here we make a special mention.” Representatives who went to Hajj previously or go periodically to Hajj.”
Al-Lami points out that “some members of the House of Representatives are actually tasked with going to Hajj on a regular annual basis, and they are members of the Parliamentary Endowments Committee. They go to see and follow up on the progress of the process of sending Iraqi pilgrims and the level of services and facilities provided to them during the Hajj season, and this is considered among the tasks of the committee.”
The leader of the “State of Law” coalition stresses that “the representative going repeatedly to Hajj, such as two, three or more times, does not say that there is a legal problem, but it is better to stay in order to deliberate and discuss important laws and files that will benefit Iraq at this stage.” Critical, especially since the House of Representatives is the main foundation of the country.”
On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Media Department of the House of Representatives denied disbursing sums to representatives entitled “Hajj Allocations.”
The department stated in a statement, “Some social media sites reported unfounded news about the House of Representatives disbursing large sums to members of the House under the title of Hajj allocations for them.”
She added that “this news is completely false,” and that “the House of Representatives reserves the right to take legal measures against any party that attempts to harm the position of the legislative authority by publishing incorrect information,” and that this “contradicts the freedom of the press and media and interferes with Within the framework of legally criminalized publishing.”
For his part, political analyst Mujasha Al-Tamimi confirms that “the frequent going of MPs and officials to Hajj is not new, but rather it is more like a political custom, and every year there is a quota for MPs, officials, party leaders, their families, and even some of those close to them or those working with them.”
Al-Tamimi explains, “The number of deputies who went for Hajj this year is estimated to range from (80) to more than (100) deputies, and most of them receive a visa as a gift from the Saudi embassy, which gives visas or Hajj opportunities to artists, journalists, and others, but at the same time The Hajj and Umrah Authority deducts this number from the share of Iraqis and gives it to some representatives, officials, media figures, and others, along with their families, and there must be accountability in this regard.
The political analyst says: “We had hoped that, at the very least, this large number of Hajj seats would be allocated to the political class, and although the Hajj and Umrah Authority’s leadership changes frequently, the context of its work has not changed in this regard for many years, and things are continuing in the same situation. The House of Representatives is witnessing a kind of favoritism and has not fulfilled its oversight duty regarding following up the work of the Commission.”
On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani revealed that half of the Iraqi pilgrims had arrived to the Holy Land by land and air, while indicating that the government supported the efforts of the Hajj Authority with 39 billion dinars.
At the beginning of this week, the Iraqi Hajj Mission said that the number of pilgrims arriving to the Holy Land through the air and land crossings reached (9,384) pilgrims and they are currently in Medina and Mecca.
