The degree of political tension in the Kurdistan region is rising with a new postponement of the date of the region’s parliament elections, despite more than a year having passed since Parliament was dissolved by a Federal Court ruling at the end of May 2023 ruling that the decision to extend its work for a year was unconstitutional.
The leader of the Kurdistan Union, Mahmoud Khoshnaw, expected that a date would be set for the region’s elections after the Eid al-Adha holiday, and he also expected that they would be held between the coming months of September and October.
Khoshnaw said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “There are no changes in the regional government, and a new program will not be agreed upon until after the elections,” adding that “the region’s parties are waiting to set a new date for the elections, which will be approved after the Eid holiday.” He added that "most of the possibilities fall within the realm of speculation, and all the proposed dates are uncertain."
Khoshnaw pointed out that “the date is supposed to not exceed the period between 9/25 and 10/10 of the current year,” stressing that “the negatives of not holding elections are many, including destabilizing the foundations of democracy, the transfer of power, and the legitimacy of institutions, and it is necessary to have a new government that faces the challenges and addresses the challenges.” internal disputes.”
For his part, writer and journalist Zirk Rahman criticized the political process in the Kurdistan region in light of the continuing crises the region is witnessing. Rahman said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “Legislative elections are the simplest levels of political participation in every society, and the more participation in them indicates the vitality of the process,” pointing out that “elections in the Kurdistan region have faced obstacles since the spring uprising in 1991 until now".
Rahman criticized the delay of the elections beyond their scheduled date, "as every parliamentary session witnesses an extension of its work in an illegal manner," noting that "the Kurdistan region is currently living in a constitutional vacuum, after Parliament extended its own extension, which was canceled by the Federal Court by ruling that the extension was unconstitutional."
The journalist and writer stated that “the region is experiencing an ongoing financial crisis, especially with regard to salaries, and in this context there is no parliament following up on the issue, and due to the continuous exceeding of legal periods, the legislative authority has become less politically valuable than it was before,” considering that “the crises The current situation in the Kurdistan region has negatively affected the political and social turnout for the elections, as the issue of legislative elections in the region has become a secondary issue for the majority of Kurds.”
