    Baghdad today - Baghdad
A Prime Minister's Office official revealed today, Monday (July 1, 2024), the truth about the existence of an upcoming Turkish-Syrian meeting in Baghdad as part of mediation to resolve differences between the two countries.
The official told "Baghdad Today", "The reports that talk about an upcoming meeting in Baghdad that includes Turkish and Syrian figures for Iraqi mediation between the two countries are incorrect, and there is no such intention to hold such a meeting."
The official, who requested to remain anonymous, stated that "what is being circulated regarding the existence of Iraqi mediation to resolve the differences between Ankara and Damascus is not true, and there is nothing concrete on this issue yet."
Last Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that there is no reason not to establish relations between Turkey and Syria, indicating that he does not rule out the possibility of holding a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, to help restore bilateral relations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Syrian newspapers revealed private sources that a “Syrian-Turkish” meeting will be held in Baghdad to restore relations and coordination between the two countries.
Observers believe that Turkey has goals related to conducting military operations in northeastern Syria, similar to what is happening in Iraq, in coordination with the Syrian side against the armed Kurdish opposition forces, in a common benefit factor that may restore the Syrian regime’s control over areas outside its control in favor of Kurdish militants or other militants.
Iraq may enter the negotiation line between the two countries, especially since Iraq had agreed to the Turkish military operations after Erdogan's visit in accordance with what also achieves a mutual benefit to cleanse the Iraqi regions from the control of Kurdish militants in exchange for preparing the regions for the path of development, which is the same thing that may be repeated with the Syrian side by carrying out Turkish military operations in exchange for the Syrian regime regaining control over these regions.
