Human rights activist Hussein Al-Aqabi called for the urgent enactment of a child protection law in Iraq to ensure a safe future for children.
Al-Aqabi said, “The enactment of the Child Protection Law in Iraq is a vital and essential step to protect children’s rights and ensure a better future for them.”
He added, "Many children in Iraq are exposed to various types of violence and abuse, whether at home, school, or even in society, and enacting a law to protect them will contribute to reducing these cases and provide them with a safer environment."
He explained that “the law must guarantee the provision of health and educational care for children, which helps develop their abilities and secure their future.”
He explained that “the law helps prevent the phenomenon of child labour, which deprives them of their right to education and a happy childhood.”
Al-Aqabi stressed that “the law could include support programs for poor families to ensure their ability to meet their children’s basic needs,” noting that “it contributes to spreading awareness among members of society about the importance of children’s rights and the necessity of protecting and caring for them.”
Experts believe that “the enactment of the Child Protection Law in Iraq reflects the state’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, and is an investment in the country’s future by providing a safe and healthy environment for children’s development.”
It is noteworthy that 4.7 million Iraqi children were affected by ISIS’s control over several cities, which caused them many problems related to displacement, not receiving vaccinations, losing their families, being exposed to physical harm, and forcing 3.5 million of them to drop out of school.
