    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Coordination Framework sees the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan from the Sultanate of Oman as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) as an attempt to appease the government and political forces in order to extend their stay in the country.
In a conversation with one of the parties to the framework, the spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Aqil Al-Rudaini, told Baghdad Today, today, Thursday (July 18, 2024), that “the Iraqi government officially requested the termination of the tasks of the UN mission in Iraq, after the improvement of the political, economic and security situation, and the country’s situation is completely different from its situation during the past years, and for this reason the United Nations rushed to replace Plasschaert with an Arab figure, in order to try to maintain its representation in Iraq for a longer period and to improve its relations better with all Iraqi parties.”
He added: "The Iraqi government is serious and determined to end the mission of the UN mission in Iraq without requesting any extension. We do not need this mission, and changing the head of the mission with an Arab figure will not affect the government or the framework forces or all other Iraqi forces. The position on this issue is fixed, and appointing an Arab figure will not change anything at all."
Last Monday, the United Nations announced the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), succeeding Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.
The international organization said in a statement that "the Secretary-General of the United Nations announced the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan from the Sultanate of Oman as his new Special Representative in Iraq and Head of the UNAMI mission, succeeding Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, from the Netherlands."
The Iraqi government had previously called on the United Nations to end the work of its political mission (UNAMI), which it has been carrying out in the country for more than 20 years, by the end of 2025, and the Security Council voted in support of Baghdad's request.
