    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Agricultural sector expert Adi Al-Rubaie confirmed today, Monday, August 5, 2024, that Iraq spent 300 billion dinars on the "illusion" of the so-called green belts.
Al-Rubaie told Baghdad Today, "Corruption has not left any sector in Iraq without penetrating it to drain the country's treasury through failed projects that have continued since 2003 until now."
He explained that "even the green belt projects, which are of great importance to the environment, have become another symbol of corruption," noting that "there are dozens of cases related to this file under investigation in several governorates."
He added, "About 300 billion dinars were spent on projects related to green belts and afforestation after 2003 under various titles inside Iraq, but they did not achieve even 1% of their goals because they were done with the vision of corrupt commercial projects, and this is what indicates their failure."
He pointed out that "Iraq is paying a heavy price for ignoring climate change, the expansion of desertification and drought, and the shrinking of green belt areas," warning that "the coming years will be more severe."
Al-Rubaie stressed the "necessity of adopting the principle of integrated projects," stating: "That is, they should be in accordance with a correct vision in terms of planting suitable trees and ensuring irrigation and care."
Calling on the government to place the issue of belts and afforestation among its priorities, as it relates to the environment, to overcome the extreme weather in the coming years.
The green belt consists of green barriers, including eucalyptus, willow, tamarisk, and other trees that can tolerate drought and soil salinity.
Windbreaks are planted in overlapping rows in areas where desert winds blow around cities to mitigate their severity and negative effects on the environment and population.
The idea of establishing green belts in Iraq returned after 2003, but it collided with the high cost and the hands of financial and administrative corruption.

    Iraq needs 16 billion trees
The Ministry of Agriculture indicates that Iraq needs more than 16 billion trees to revive areas suffering from desertification.
The ministry said in a statement published on October 9, 2023, “Our project is based on distributing shrubs to municipalities in Baghdad, governorates, and civil society organizations for free to plant them inside and around cities to support the green belt to prevent the desert from encroaching on cities.”
The statement added: "These trees will improve the environment, be a natural windbreak, increase the production of fruit trees, and prevent desertification around cities."
    Neglect and extinction
Drought and neglect threaten the green belt, which includes trees planted 16 years ago around the city of Karbala to limit desertification and sandstorms that are increasing dramatically in Iraq .
This belt was established in 2006 as part of an initiative launched by the local Karbala government, in which tens of thousands of palm, olive and eucalyptus trees were planted, with the aim of reducing desertification and sandstorms that emanate from the deserts surrounding the city of Karbala, south of the capital, Baghdad.
However, some parts of it were destroyed before the religious shrines in Karbala adopted the project.
