Shafaq News/ Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his thanks on Sunday to the governments and parliaments of those countries that recognized what the Yazidis were subjected to in Sinjar district by ISIS as a genocide.
Fuad Hussein said in a speech during the Yazidi Genocide Conference, which was held at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Baghdad, that the Iraqi government and the regional government made efforts within the committee to search for the kidnapped, and work is continuing to return them and achieve justice for them through compensation.
He added, "We thank the governments of countries and parliaments that recognized what the Yazidis were subjected to as a genocide at the hands of ISIS gangs and terrorists."
Hussein continued, saying, “We reaffirm our support for the Yazidis in particular, and we reiterate that the State Department will continue to highlight the genocide that the Yazidis were subjected to, and we pledge to do everything necessary to achieve justice and compensation for the families of the victims of ISIS.”
ISIS invaded Sinjar district in 2014 and committed a massacre against its residents, killing Yazidi men, youth and elderly people, taking Yazidi women and girls as captives and kidnapping their children.
In 2015, the Peshmerga forces recaptured the district from ISIS, but the Iraqi army, backed by the Popular Mobilization Forces, took control of the district due to tensions between the region and the federal government over the independence referendum in 2017.
It is noteworthy that Baghdad and Erbil had reached an agreement on October 9, 2020, to normalize the situation in Sinjar, stipulating that the district would be managed jointly in administrative, security and service aspects, but this agreement has not yet entered into actual implementation for political reasons, according to officials in the Kurdistan Region.
