    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee explained, today, Tuesday (August 20, 2024), the reasons for the decline of the tribal bench in Iraq, while indicating its decline by 70% compared to previous years.
“The tribal bench has created serious repercussions as a result of the casualties it causes and the terror it inflicts on the people,” said MP Yasser Iskandar, a member of the committee, in an interview with Baghdad Today. He pointed out that recent years have witnessed a significant increase before decisive measures were taken to contain it by tightening legal penalties and the interaction of tribal sheikhs in preventing it.
Iskandar added that "the tribal bench in Iraq has declined by 70% compared to previous years, and this is a step in the right direction," noting that "the use of weapons in the middle of alleys and neighborhoods for any reason is a wrong path that has its drawbacks in terrorizing families, and the law must take its course."
He pointed out that "the bench has receded but it has not ended, and the tightening of legal penalties came in order to block the way for any attempts in this direction."
On Monday (March 4, 2024), Arif Al-Hamami, a member of the House of Representatives for Dhi Qar Governorate, revealed the existence of a parliamentary movement to classify tribal conflicts within the Anti-Terrorism Law, revealing details of the proposal to purchase weapons from citizens.
Al-Hamami said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "We informed Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani of the necessity of starting the military operation to establish security in Dhi Qar Governorate, where the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces responded that the operation would proceed soon."
Regarding the proposal to purchase weapons from citizens, Al-Hamami explained that “the government will announce the purchase of medium and heavy weapons from citizens and tribes,” stressing that “if any party refuses to sell officially, the security forces will forcibly remove those weapons.”
He stressed that "some of our tribes have an arsenal that exceeds the capabilities of the security services in the province, and this is part of what caused the conflict in the Islah district," noting that "there are dialogues between members of parliament and the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faeq Zidane, with the aim of issuing a strict judicial decision towards those who incite tribal conflicts, similar to the tribal assault, considering its perpetrators within Article Four of the Anti-Terrorism Law."
