The Coordination Framework forces are seeking to avoid potential repercussions on the political system that could be caused by three major cases that have erupted over the past days, weeks and years: the “theft of the century” file, the “wiretapping” network, and finally the serious accusations made by the head of the Integrity Commission against the Iraqi judiciary.
Hours after provocative statements by the head of the Integrity Commission, Haider Hanoun, the “Coordination Framework” held a meeting with the aim of containing the crises and supporting the course of judicial investigations.
On Wednesday, Judge Haider Hanoun opened fire on everyone and unleashed a torrent of information regarding the theft and investigations into it. He said, “The accused of stealing tax deposits, Nour Zuhair, forged 114 financial checks, and must be punished with 114 sentences.”
The regime may collapse
A senior source from the Coordination Framework forces confirmed that “there is a real fear that the scandals will lead to the collapse of the regime.”
The source, who is familiar with the framework meeting’s behind-the-scenes details, said, “The Iraqi political system is based on three authorities: executive, legislative, and judicial. Since the legislative and executive authorities have been rife, the judiciary will be its last stronghold, and when it cracks, there will be no system left.”
He added, “The previous American accusations against the judiciary had an international dimension, and the accusations of the head of integrity against it may establish a local dimension, and these two dimensions will have great harm to the political system as a whole, and hence the fears of the leaders of the (Coordination Framework).”
The source explained that the meeting held by the “Coordination Framework” on Wednesday evening, in the presence of Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani, was primarily aimed at questioning him about “the reasons for what is happening and the nature of the treatments that the government can provide to overcome the repercussions of the three major issues.”
Violations of al-Sudani’s office
The Coordination Framework issued a statement following the meeting, stating that it discussed the circulated violations by some employees of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s office, in reference to the “wiretapping” case that recently erupted.
The statement indicated that the meeting listened to a summary from Al-Sudani regarding the violations being circulated by some of his office employees. Al-Sudani was quoted as stressing the importance of “holding accountable anyone proven to have been negligent,” and expressed his support for the judiciary in its investigations and procedures.
The framework forces renewed their support for “the efforts made by the judiciary in this context,” as well as their support for “the government’s efforts to implement its program to serve citizens and implement projects that improve Iraqi reality.”
Al-Maliki defends the judiciary
In this regard, the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, strongly defended the judiciary one day after the head of the Integrity Commission accused the judiciary. He seemed upset by the head of the Integrity Commission’s accusations against the judiciary, although he did not mention his name specifically during his speech.
News had leaked from behind the scenes of the State of Law that Al-Maliki was among the figures targeted in the “wiretapping” operation, which angered him.
Al-Maliki said during his speech, “The political process that we are living through is the result of struggle and giving, and was founded on democracy and the separation of powers in order to sustain the political project.”
He added: “We have repeatedly warned against any misunderstanding between the authorities, and the importance of understanding between them in order to stabilize the political process. No authority, the executive, legislative and judicial, can be isolated from each other.”
Al-Maliki continued, “The judiciary deserves all respect, and it is the authority we turn to in every crisis, and we have complete confidence in it. We hope that our complete confidence in the judiciary and its efforts to control matters that require a judicial decision to separate cases will continue.”
He believed that “encroaching on the powers of the judiciary or the executive or legislative authority represents a dangerous beginning to repercussions more dangerous than the repercussions of terrorist operations targeting the regime.”
Al-Maliki called on everyone to “respect the judiciary, and what it says is the final judgment in all cases.”
“Trial of the Century”
For his part, the head of the Hikma Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, called for a “trial of the century” to prosecute the “theft of the century.”
He said in a recorded speech: “Let this trial be public, as we did with Saddam Hussein, even if the names of major figures are included in it.”
The accused in the “theft of the century,” Nour Zuhair, is now being pursued by an arrest warrant issued by the Iraqi Corruption Court, after it canceled the conditional bail that was granted to him to recover the tax deposit certificates.
The authorities said they intend to activate the “red signal” with “Interpol” to arrest the main suspect in the “theft of the century,” Nour Zuhair.
Last week, the Integrity Commission confirmed that it was proceeding with the procedures to seize the assets of the accused Nour Zuhair inside and outside Iraq.
