Parliamentary Oil: Iraq will dispense with gas imports by this date

Member of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, Basem Al-Gharibawi, revealed the date for Iraq to dispense with gas imports.
Al-Gharibawi said that “previous licensing contracts did not take into account the issue of gas flaring and processing through investment.”
He added that “the government has recently focused on the issue of investing in associated gas, through the ongoing licensing rounds, especially the sixth.”
He pointed out that “investing in gas will have a positive impact that will push Iraq to reach self-sufficiency,” noting that “the file needs time, but the year 2030 will be the date for Iraq to dispense with imported gas.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said that the percentage of investment in associated gas for oil production in the country has increased from 50 percent to 61 percent.
Al-Sudani said, during the inauguration of the associated gas processing project in the Halfaya field in Maysan Governorate, with a capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day, that efforts are continuing to invest all gas production, noting that the goal is to reach zero burnt gas by 2028.
He stressed that “this qualitative project comes within the efforts to increase the benefit from the oil and gas wealth that began in 2019, and witnessed intensive follow-up to activate and complete it, to be achieved today on the path of economic reform and optimal investment, in order to stop the burning of associated gas, and what it includes in terms of waste and impact on the environment and health.”
He stated that the resulting gas will directly contribute to operating power stations and stopping imports, and the hard currency it drains annually; as gas production has realistically increased from 2972 million standard cubic feet per day in 2022, to 3100 million standard cubic feet per day; noting that what is currently being invested does not exceed 1800 million standard cubic feet per day.
The Iraqi government statement indicated that the project, which was completed within the oil licensing rounds contracts, consists of two power units, each with a capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet. The project sweetens and dries gas and separates its basic components to obtain dry gas products that are used to supply the national grid to operate the two power stations: Amara Government and Maysan Investment, to generate more than 1,200 megawatts.
The project also includes the production of liquid gas to cover the needs of Maysan Governorate, with an initial capacity of 1,100 tons per day at the beginning of operation, reaching 2,200 tons per day, for domestic or car use, and transporting surplus quantities to other governorates, and producing gas condensates with a production capacity of up to 20,000 barrels per day, which are mixed with the produced crude oil to improve its specifications. The project also produces sulfur as a by-product of the processing operations.
