    Al-Zawraa/Mustafa Fleih:
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan expressed its optimism about the success of the upcoming elections for the Kurdistan Parliament, and among the reasons for that, it stressed that no party in the region can form a government on its own.
The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiath Al-Surji, said in an interview with “Al-Zawraa” that “we are approaching the elections on the 20th of this month, and we are sufficiently prepared to encourage citizens to participate in the elections and encourage our supporters and organizations to participate.”
“We are optimistic about the success of the electoral process for several reasons. First, the Independent High Commission in Baghdad is the one supervising this process because previously the Kurdistan Regional Commission was supervising, and we as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and all the Kurdish parties thought that this commission was not neutral and was biased towards the Kurdistan Democratic Party,” he added. “The second point is that the lists of names of voters or those who voted previously were a list affiliated with the Kurdistan Region, but now we are relying on the lists of the central government, and there is a huge difference between the two lists, the Kurdistan Region list and the Baghdad list, by tens of thousands of votes. This, of course, may lead to the reassurance of all parties to participate seriously.”
He stressed that “the parties were hesitant to participate in the past because they believed that the Kurdistan Democratic Party would gain votes and seats through the commission and through these differences in names and several other issues, but I am optimistic now and this process will be carried out normally and we will proceed without problems.” He pointed out that “there are some tensions or some media escalation and political defamation between the parties, especially between the Patriotic Union and the Democratic Party, but we were forced to respond to the Kurdistan Democratic Party because it was the one who started attacking us and accusing us of treason,” calling for self-restraint during the remaining days of the election campaign.
He explained, “If we cannot form the government alone, we will establish coalitions and alliances with political parties to form the government, because neither the Democratic Party nor we can form the government if we do not form an alliance or unite among ourselves. In the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, our program and goal is always for all parties to participate, each according to its electoral entitlement, and we do not want to marginalize any party, figure, coalition, alliance, or any political force.”
He pointed out that “according to our expectations, the Patriotic Union will increase its seats in the Kurdistan Parliament and will increase its votes, but I do not expect that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan or any party will obtain 50+1, meaning ½+1, to form the government.”
He noted that “the Kurdistan Democratic Party, especially in the last session, won 45 seats out of 111 seats and 11 quotas were with the Democratic Party, and it could have formed the government with the quotas and components, but it did not form the government without the Union, and this is our reality, and we cannot form the government without the Kurdistan Democratic Party.”[/size]
