The 16th BRICS Summit kicked off today, Tuesday (October 22, 2024), in the city of Kazan in Russia, with the participation of 38 countries.
This summit focuses on two main items: the first is strengthening multilateralism for fair global development and security, and the second is establishing a digital payments platform for the BRICS group known as the BRICS Bridge to break Western financial hegemony.
The summit is considering whether to accept new members into the group, with more than 34 countries seeking to either join BRICS or cooperate in some form.
This is the first summit after 5 new countries joined the BRICS group in 2024, and the group summit will continue for 3 days until next Thursday (October 24, 2024).
Regarding the main topics of the BRICS summit, Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov said that the Kazan summit will discuss ways to strengthen multilateralism in the world, integrate new members, and resolve regional conflicts.
Another prominent topic that the summit will discuss is the creation of a digital payments platform for the BRICS group known as the BRICS Bridge to break Western financial dominance, according to a report by The Economist magazine.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the alternative payment system would allow economic transactions to be carried out "without relying on those who decided to make weapons out of dollars and euros." According to the magazine, Western financial regulators are concerned about the possibility of an alternative payment system.
During the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold bilateral meetings with most of the participating leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jingping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Iranian President Masoud Peskov, where the comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran is scheduled to be discussed.
On the third and final day of the summit, it is scheduled to adopt the Kazan Declaration, a comprehensive document summarizing the achievements of the forum, and also the achievements of the Russian presidency as a whole.
Russia chairs the BRICS group this year and during this period Moscow has set three priorities: politics and security, cooperation in the economy and finance, and humanitarian and cultural exchanges. It has also organized more than 200 political, economic and social events to promote ways to implement further cooperation among the BRICS countries.
38 countries are scheduled to participate in the summit, 24 of which will be represented by their leaders, while 8 countries will be represented by high-level officials. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is also scheduled to participate in the summit.
BRICS is an international group that was created in 2006. It initially included Russia, Brazil, India and China, and then South Africa joined the group in 2011.
At the beginning of 2024, 5 new countries joined the group: Egypt, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Ethiopia.
