The Ministry of Transport will launch a new package of development and expansion projects for Baghdad
International Airport early next month.
The Director of the Ministry's Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah: His ministry has adopted an integrated plan to develop air traffic in the country, through rehabilitating airports and opening up to international airlines wishing to operate flights through local airports, especially Baghdad International Airport, which is witnessing comprehensive development projects for the runway, lighting system, water and electricity networks, improving passenger and baggage screening devices, and updating electrical networks in line with global developments in this regard. He revealed that a new package of expansion and development projects for Baghdad International Airport will be launched early next month, including the expansion of Abbas Ibn Firnas Square and transforming it into a civilized facade with commercial entertainment centers, noting that the past nine months of this year have achieved significant growth in the number of passengers, which reflects the growing confidence in Baghdad Airport and strengthens its position as a hub for air transport in the Middle East. In the same context, Al-Safi indicated that development operations are also continuing at Najaf International Airport, while the middle of next year will witness the opening of Nasiriyah and Mosul International Airports, which will contribute to revitalizing commercial, tourist and investment activity for all sectors in addition to supporting economic growth in the two governorates as they possess a historical legacy and tourist areas that will be a magnet for tourists from various countries of the world.
