Iraq Facing Challenges: Hopes of Establishing a Waste Recycling Plant in the East... Will It Succeed?

Iraq faces multiple challenges in its quest to establish a waste recycling plant in the eastern region, amid growing concerns about environmental pollution and waste accumulation.
These efforts are part of the government's plans to reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainable development, but Iraq faces major difficulties in the form of a lack of infrastructure, weak funding, and security challenges.
Pressure is mounting from the international and local community on the Iraqi government to adopt new environmental projects as a sustainable solution to the growing waste crisis, especially in crowded urban areas.
Amid these challenges, the private sector can play a pivotal role in supporting these projects, by investing in advanced technology and the necessary expertise, with government encouragement through facilities and laws that ensure an appropriate investment environment.
Questions remain about Iraq's readiness to start this ambitious project, and to secure it environmentally and financially, in light of the existing problems that hinder the progress of many projects in the country.
MP Mudhar Al-Karwi revealed a green light from Baghdad to build the first waste recycling plant in eastern Iraq.
Al-Karwi said, “The eastern governorates of Iraq, including Diyala, are suffering from a waste crisis and its negative consequences in environmental files and continuous pollution, especially of the atmosphere and groundwater.”
He added, "He prepared a study that was submitted to the Prime Minister's Office, which interacted with it and gave the green light to proceed with establishing the first waste recycling plant in Diyala in eastern Iraq. This is the beginning of a future phase that will be generalized during the coming period."
He explained that "waste recycling is a step towards reducing the risk of environmental pollution, especially with landfill fires and their direct impact on citizens' health, in addition to direct groundwater pollution."
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from environmental pollution for several reasons, including the lack of proper treatment of the waste file in a way that reduces emissions.
