(IraqiNews.com) -The European Union expressed concerns over the execution sentence in Iraq.
The High Representative for Foreign Policy & Security Affairs at the EU, Katherine Ashton, said in a statement received by IraqiNews.com on Wednesday “We are worried towards the recent reports about the number of executions in Iraq where 123 execution sentences were implemented in 2012.”
“Ashton expressed regret over Iraq’s re-adopting the executions at a time the Iraqi government had pledged to reconsider the detainees and the prisoners’ cases,” the statement added.

She stressed “The EU believes that the execution sentence violates the basic human rights and this penalty does not work as deterrent for crimes.”
She called on “Iraq to halt all the execution sentences and join 2nd optional protocol attached to the international covenant related to the civil and political rights which aims to cancel the execution penalty,” according to the statement.
