Shafaq News / Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced on Monday, releasing thousands of prisoners in the first half of this year, while noted releasing 311 women and indicated that the ministry “will continue"” to follow arrested people files.
“The ministry has released a large number of prisoners after ending their sentences, in addition to the detainees whom their cases have been considered in coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council,” the spokesman for the ministry, Wesam al-Furaiji said in a statement received by “Shafaq News”.
“ 4296 prisoners were released during the first half of this year, including 311 women”.
“The release of the mentioned prisoners from the ministry's prisons was for the period from 01/01/2013 until 30/06/2013m” he added.
The Ministry of Justice has indicated according to the senior deputy of the ministry in response to statements by humanitarian organizations concerned with human rights in Iraq, that the total number of prisoners in all prisons in Iraq is 24568 prisoners, noting in a press statement that these organizations “exaggerated” to mention the numbers of prisoners.
