Three Blue Jackets named to NHL All-Star Game

Also taking part in the All-Star game festivities is Head Coach John Tortorella who is likely to be a part of the Metro Division coaching staff.

This will be Bobrovsky’s and Tortorella’s second All-Star selections. Bobrovsky was selected in 2015 but did not participate due to an injury, and Tortorella was selected back in 2012 when he was with the New York Rangers. This is Jones’ first selection to an All-Star game.

The Jones selection is an interesting one as many thought it would have went to Zach Werenski. Werenski leads the Blue Jackets d-core with 25 points, which is tied for eighth among all NHL defencemen. At 5 on 5 he also leads Jacket defencemen with a 52.24% Corsi. Jones however is not a bad pick at all. He has a 51.11% Corsi, not far behind Werenski. Jones has 18 points which is back of Werenski but keep in mind Weresnki has 15 power play points whereas Jones as two. At even strength Jones leads 16-10. At 5 on 5 Jones has 11 points verses just seven for Werenski. Jones leads Jacket defencemen with 1.13 points per 60.

The Bobrovsky case is an easy one to make. He has been arguably the best goalie in the Eastern Conference and second best in the league behind Devan Dubynk. Bobrovsky leads the league with 26 wins, five ahead of second place Dubnyk. His .931 save percentage is tied for third in the league with fellow Metro goalie All-Star Brayden Holtby. Bob is also tied for third in the league with three shutouts. He’s been a work horse for the Jackets starting 34 games and has already played 1979:53 minutes the fourth most in the league.

Tortorella will enter the All-Star break as the leader for the Jack Adams trophy. In his first full season with the Blue Jackets, they have exceeded even the most optimistic projections. Many people had this team in the lottery conversation and outlined the best case scenario as a team that could maybe sneak in and get the second wild card. Nobody had this team in first place and that is a testament to the great job by the players and the coach. Tortorella has done great work this year optimizing the roster, the usage of Sam Gaganer has been talked about a ton, but that entire fourth line with Gagner, Hartnell and Sedlak has been fantastic. Tortorella has found lines that work and has stuck with them and is being rewarded for it.

The All-Star game will take place on January 29th in Los Angeles.
