Loss to Sharks still a positive right?

A person can look at that loss in two ways: one, a go ahead goal due to a rookie mistake or two, they hung with a top team in the west and made them work for everything.

I'll take the latter and here's why: that was not the 'same team' we have seen for much of 2017. Aside from the power play, the team looked organized, alert and decisive in their approach to the game.

While the Sharks make life miserable for the opposition down the middle, something the astute Rob Cleave pointed out on Twitter during the game, the Jets found ways to deal with it, at least when not on the PP. There were controlled entries, excellent cycle work and passing in the offensive zone and whole check of a lot of shot attempts.

After the Jets tied the game up on a bullet blast from Morrissey, who arguably had his best shift and game of the season, the Jets took over possession. What kept them from taking a solid lead was the play of San Jose goalie Dell and the cliche of 'puck luck'.

The first Sharks goal was a classic case of puck luck and bounce going the right way as Hellebuyck did his best to imitate Pavelec in the athletic style department. The Jets had those chances in front too, for most of the second period but could not put the puck in net. Oh they had chances though.

The game tipped to San Jose's favour when on the power play Laine made another rookie mistake with a soft passive pass across the ice that was picked off by Boedker and the taken in for a goal- shorthanded too. The Jets reeled and eventually gave up a empty-net goal when the puck seemed to hit Ehlers' stick and as he was unprepared for it, the puck trickled into the net. The goal post and stick paid a price for that by Ehlers as he smashed the stick after in a rare sign of frustration.

The Dane had been flying all night and look dangerous but again could not come up with anything in the points department. The Jets did make it interesting with 8 seconds left as Scheifele scored a late PP goal to bring the home team within one but that's all that could be mustered with the time remaining.

The Sharks are a big heavy team and the Jets rolled with them, coincidentally Byfuglien was in full beast mode which helps too. The Jets were feisty and aggressive but when on the power play that seemed to change which was unfortunate considering the chances they had with the man advantage.

The Sharks did what most smart teams do against the Jets power play- they overload the puck carrier and force them to make a bad decisions and that's exactly what happened again last night until the final minute of the game.

Maurice tired various player combos even giving Marko Dano a good look on the PP when perhaps he should have stuck to what was safer. It did not seem to work much, or at all though.

The loss stings but only if you are believer that the team has a chance to make the playoffs and and should pull out all the stops to do so. Of course that's important but what's also important is playing the right way and for the most part the Jets did. With the rare series of exceptions they looked like a much tighter, organized team. Is that because they are loose knowing the pressure is off, at least for a little bit? Perhaps or are they finally adjusting properly, and coaches making the right adjustments too?

Before this game most fans would have been okay with a tie or a close game and the Jets had a chance to make it a tie and like other times this season, too many of them really, they failed to get that lone loser point or give themselves a chance for the extra point. That wasn't due to how they played overall as much as a lone mistake. Laine knows he screwed up, hopefully he learns from it and the team keeps doing all the other things correctly. If that's the case this game was a positive for the Jets and I'd keep looking at it that way.
