[ltr]Taiwan has announced US approval to allow US contractors to help Taipei build submarines, welcoming the so-called "big breakthrough" in its chronic ambition to form its naval fleet to counter the growing Chinese threat in the region.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US State Department has agreed to grant licenses to sell Taiwan the technology it needs in its ambitious military project.[/ltr]
[ltr]Taiwan's Defense Ministry spokesman Shin Chung-shi said US approval was a "breakthrough" in the case.[/ltr]
[ltr]The agreement is likely to anger Beijing, which considers the Asian island part of its territory, although the two countries have ruled separately since the end of the civil war in 1949.[/ltr]
[ltr]Last year, Taiwan launched a plan to manufacture its submarines as relations with China deteriorated following the failure of its efforts to buy submarines from the United States.[/ltr]
