US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States was involved in "multilateral efforts ... to persuade China to act as a normal nation in terms of trade" and respect for international law after Washington accused 10 Chinese people of stealing secrets from the aviation sector.
In a radio interview on Wednesday, Pompeo described China's behavior in intellectual property theft as "inappropriate" and "incompatible with being a superpower or a big country."
"The theft of another country's intellectual property, something China is doing and worth hundreds of billions of dollars, is something that only China should find a way to stop it," he told Brian Kilmead Xu's program.
He also told another radio program that China would probably be the biggest national security challenge facing the United States in the long run and that the administration of President Donald Trump was tackling the issue "on all fronts."
A US indictment revealed on Tuesday that Chinese intelligence officers had conspired with cyber infiltrators and people inside companies to hack computer systems of private companies to steal information about a jet engine used in commercial aircraft.
It is the third big spy case involving companies involving Chinese intelligence officers who have been referred to the US Department of Justice since last month and comes at a time when Washington is waging a fierce trade war with Beijing.
