A South Korean government official said on Monday that his country had received an exemption from the United States on the import of Iranian oil as US sanctions on Tehran took effect.
South Korea is a US ally and one of the biggest buyers of Iranian oil in Asia and has asked Washington for "maximum flexibility" last week after some South Korean contractors canceled energy-related contracts in Iran due to funding difficulties.
The United States said on Friday it would temporarily allow eight importers to continue buying Iranian oil when it reinstates sanctions to force Tehran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities.
Under US law exceptions can be granted for up to 180 days.
"Petrochemicals are an essential element of our economy and we have stressed that if we are affected by Iranian sanctions, this will pose a serious challenge to our economy as a whole," said the official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Which countries have received exemptions for importing Iranian oil?

South Korea has obtained an exemption from the United States on the import of Iranian oil as US sanctions against Tehran come into force, a South Korean government official said on Monday.
South Korea is one of the allies of the United States and one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil in Asia, and asked Washington "maximum flexibility" last week after some South Korean contractors canceled contracts related to energy in Iran because of funding difficulties.
The United States said on Friday it would temporarily allow eight importers to continue buying Iranian oil when it reinstates sanctions to force Tehran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that his country had given temporary exemptions to eight governments of sanctions against Iran in return for gradually reducing the quantities of oil it receives.
Those countries did not include the European Union. "We will present the list of the eight on Monday, but the EU will not get exceptions," Pompeo told a news conference.
For his part, a State Department official revealed that the countries that have received a temporary exception include India, China, South Korea and Japan, which is still negotiating some conditions for the application of sanctions.
Others have suggested that Italy be the only European country temporarily excluded.
The list exempted from sanctions will also be included if it temporarily deals with Iran, Turkey. Turkey's energy minister, Fatih Dunmiz, said the United States had informed Turkey that the latter would be exempted from the second round of US sanctions on Iran. Under US law, exemptions could be granted for up to 180 days.
"Petrochemicals are an essential element of our economy and we have stressed that if we are affected by Iranian sanctions, this will pose a serious challenge to our economy as a whole," the official said.
