Sources: Saudi Arabia told Iraq ready to supply gas instead of Iran
Saudi Arabia has told Iraq it is prepared to supply gas and electricity after Washington has set sanctions on Iran, political sources said Monday.
"Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Faleh discussed with the Iraqi government during his visit to Baghdad during the last few days his country's readiness to supply Iraq with gas and electric power after the US-appointed 45-day period for Iraq on sanctions against Iran," the sources said.
The United States has "given Iraq a temporary 45-day exemption from sanctions to allow Iraq to continue to buy natural gas and electricity from Iran," the US embassy said on its Facebook page."This exemption provides time for Iraq to begin taking steps towards independence in the energy field," the embassy said.
Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Fateh arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for an official visit.
